Sharing Windows7 / Windows Vista
Hi,i have 4 computers and a home server: tabletpc - windows 7 ultimate, dell - windows vista ultimate, home server, laptop - windows vista home premium and mediacenter - windows vista ultimate. All computers are in 1 workgroup and on all are the same LOCAL user accounts and passwords set and all in the same subnet.I can connect to the shares from laptop and tabletpc to home server and mediacenter without type a username/password.Last weekend i set up mymediacenterwith windows 7 ultimate. the local username/password are the same on my other pcs.now i cant connect to the share on mediacenter pc without username/password. i must provide a username/password!see screenshot (http://cid-966b26a11278266e.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Blogfotos/win7%7C_sharing%7C_credentials.jpg)NTFS and sharing permissions are set to the local user accounts on the folder which i will share.password protected sharing ison and and on all vista/win7 pcs are the network is a home network.whats wrong now?is the sharing with homegroups other than with "normal" sharing?Kind regards Joerg Greetz Joerg

Hi Joerg,Can you set all computers to use Work instead of Home?Win7 introduces the Homegroup concept and if you set it as Homegroup, it does not have the same effect as the traditional Home/Work network location in Windows Vista. Let us know if that helps.Jabez Gan [MVP] - http://www.msblog.org Contributing Author for: (Sybex) MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Applications Infrastructure Configuration Study Guide: Exam 70-643

Hi Jabez, the change of the location from home to work does not have any changes. From a Vista notebook to Win 7 mediacenter now i can connect to my shares, this works yesterday evening, too.Now the only problem is that i dont can connect from MY tabletpc to the win7 mediacenter shares without a password promt. The "domain" is tabletpc when i connect as "mediacenter\username" the connecting to my shares works, also with my linked LiveID.Greetz Joerg

Hi Greetz, Have you changed the authentication level on the other computers? By default, the authentication level on Windows Vista and Windows 7 beta is the same, but different with it on Windows Home Server. Have you changed the level on the Windows Vista computer to make them work properly with Windows Home Server before? Network security: LAN Manager authentication levelArthur Xie - MSFT

Hi Arthur,on my tabletpc - win7 and mediacenter - win7 the authentication level is set to Send NTLMv2 response only\refuse LM & NTLM from me.The authentication level on my home server is set to: Send NTLMv2 response only\refuse LM & NTLM , tooBut there is no problem to connect from or tabletpc, mediacenter both with win7 and vista to my home server From Vista and a virtual xp i can connnectto the mediacenter pc with win 7.The connection from my tabletpc - win7 to my dell with vista works, tooThe only problem is by my tabletpc with win7 to connect to themediacenter with win7 without a password dialog. i must enter a passwordthe first timei will connect to this pc or the shares withdomain\username like "mediacenter\joerg". this works, butwhen the mediacenter pc was vista i dont must enter a password, the authetication was in the background automatically handled.Greetz Joerg

Does the issue occur when you try to access the tablet PC from the mediacenter PC? If not, it should not be a design issue. In this case, I suggest that you temporary disable or remove the anti-virus and firewall on the mediacenter PC.Arthur Xie - MSFT
