Shared file access between Windows 7 and Windows XP
I have set up a dual boot Windows 7 64b and Windows XP SP3 with all data files in a separate partition.I wish to open the data files in both systems. How can file access be granted to achieve this?Currently I have set ownership to "everyone" whilst in XP. I can access both the folders and files in XP but in Windows 7 I can access the folders but cannot open the files. Partly solved!

I now have file sharing by both OP systems working. I simply used my original backup of the data files to replace all the files and their NTFS settings.Currently an inspection of the security settings of both folders and files shows access to "everyone" and interestingly the ownership can be either the Xp owner or the 7 owner. I am not sure what originally went wrong, but it seems that when moving the links to My Documents, My pictures etc in Windows 7 a change of security occurred. So simply setting security back to the original XP settings in my backup enabled the desired operation.I use AIS backup that is flexible enough to allow a choice of how the files and folders are restored, such as re-write everything.

Hi Davmax1589, Have the issue been fixed? Generally, change the ownership and the permission settings can achieve your goal. But it is not recommended to change the settings for the system file\folder. You may consider to create new folders to save the files for sharing with both operating system. Regards,Arthur Li - MSFT

Thanks Arthur,Note that the file problem is solved. I had no intention of changing system folders/files, because I have all the data files that were affected on a separate partition. Hope you read how I solved the problem.
