Share My Documents from Windows 7Home Premium to Windows XP Pro
I'm trying to share the My Document s folder (Read/Write) with a Windows XP Pro computer on the same network. Connection is via Netgear Wireless router. Both computers are hard wired. I had this working perfectly with Win 7 RC1 but can't make it work with Win 7 Home Premium. I can share two printers connected to the Win 7 system as well as other folders on a D: drive. Just stuff on the C: (boot) drive is giving me fits. I've tried all the things I know to do. Add a Everyone user and give it full control. Change Ownership from Owner to Administrators then System and back. Disabled Windows Firewall. Disabled Microsoft Security Essentials (my AV software). Can anyone tell me how to make this work? I'm sure it's something basic I've missed. Thanks Rich

Did you change the share from C$ to create another share just calling it C: or just specifying a folder? Generally I don't share out my C Drive, I just create a share folder and put whatever I want to share in it. You mention you already shared D drive yes? Shouldn't have to change ownership at all. As you said, give everyone full control (if its internal LAN). It shouldn't be any different than sharing a folder on D: if you're just sharing folders. Sounds like you've got everything up to par. What error messages are you getting? Can you ping the XP machine and can the XP machine ping the win7 machine? can you access it by //ip address/C: or D: whatever shares you have named? Course I make it easy on myself having my computers in a domain. All computers are accessed depending on what I share with domain users, so centralized user accounts makes it easy. Since you mentioned XP Pro, and I know you got some networking experience to some degree but I'm going to suggest a real simple guide just so you can double check, so it might be overkill for youhttp://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/share-files-and-printers-between-windows-7-and-xp/MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. The error I get on the XP system is Access denied. I'll read through it tomorrow when I'm at work, thanks. I'm the "Computer Guy" at my churches Thrift Store. We have 3 computer in out normal WORKGROUP, 2 XP Pro and 1 new Windows 7 Home Ultimate (hmmm, that's a change from RC1 which I was running before as it was Ultimate, wonder if that has something to do with it). I just realized my initial post was in error. I'm typing this at home so used my home Win 7 data instead of the one at the Thrift Store. I'll correct that in a minuteRich

I read through the info at the link you provided and it is very well written. Unfortunately, it doesn't go into sharing other folders like My Documents or the entire C: drive, just the existing public folders. Hmmm, is there any way to make My Documents a public folder? That would probably resolve the problem. I do need to be able to share the entire C: drive as well at some point. I defined the share a Dell-E521_C (not trying to use C$). Any share I setup on C: gets Access Denied when I try to look at it via Network Places of command line. Edit: Read through all the followup posts and noticed this one: from Mike November 26 2009 2:59AM I think that may be the key as I don't remember adding Everyone at that point. I'll try it tomorrow and see.Rich

Hi Rich,Please try \\<computername> or \\<IPaddress> (using the Windows 7 computer's computer name or IP address) on Windows XP system to see if it can be accessed. If it asks for a user name and password, type an admin account on Windows 7 system. Meanwhile please try enable Guest account on Windows 7 and clear its password if one is set. If any error occurs please provide a screenshot. Here are the steps to upload a picture.

Adding Everyone as the link I posted described fixed it. I am now able to share the entire C: drive and Documents (My Documents) R/W which is what I needed. Shaon, using \\<computername> or \\<IPaddress> did not work until I made the above change. Now it works and browsing via My Network Places works. Thank you cdobbs for the link to the info that fixed this. It was driving me nuts.Rich
