Setting up a VERY secure restricted user on a unique VPN connection, windows7
Hi folks, I'm learning about VPN connections, and I would like some good help on how to keep what's at the VPN's servers, or beyond it, out of my LAN and PCs to the greatest extent possible -- yet still be able to surf, browse, do web business. Can you help? I normally have the "normal" Internet connection via either the wireless or hardwire connection straight to my ISP. Because I live in Latin America right now, and travel a lot, I sometimes have to depend on local ISPs for my Internet access, and frequently this means that US-based web sites using a lot of javascript and CSS files, lots of internal redirects and menus, etc., sometimes just don't work right -- or at all. The workaround has been to use a VPN to connect via a US-based server, which brings me good connections and good throughput, but does bring security concerns with it. (I've noticed that sometimes, just a 2 minute connection to a web page in the US via a VPN will somehow "cure" the sluggish URL resolution and page load via my local ISP, even if I immediately pull the VPN connection off... till the next time I reboot of course, or Windows 7 goes to Sleep or Hibernate.) So what I'd like to be able to do is pre-build / set up several of these VPN connections, using my normal ISP IP connection, and have them be very restricted as to what inbound actions from the VPN side of the house can do. These sites do have to work with session cookies, etc., always enabled, but I'd like to have as many "normally available" shares disabled, good logging turned on, etc., so that if anything other than the HTTPS or email sessions I start up try to run, I can quickly investigate and deal with it. It's not that I don't trust these VPN services providers... well, yes, I don't. Or rather, I want to trust, but really, really, no-kidding verify and control. Or am I being paranoid? I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, both 64 and 32 bit versions, AVAST free antivirus and Windows firewall enabled. If this all can be made to work, I'd like to replicate the same features on an XP machine too. Any advice, ideas, etc., short of a separate throw-away machine I can always reformat and reload, and very firm router programming to make sure it's on the outside of my LAN space? Thanks!

Hi, What's VPN client do you use? Cisco or others? As far as i know, Cisco does very well in the VPN area. Why don't you ask to the Cisco Tech? I suppose you would get a satisfactory answer. Best Regards Spencer TechNet Community Support
