Setting up a Secure Share on Windows 7 Homegroup network
Here is the Layout of our network. 14 machines all running Windows 7 Pro, all within the same homegroup, All Have an Admin account with the same name and password, all machine have another account that is different on all machines, we have a share that all the homegroup users can see and write to. What we would like to do is set up a share that only the admin account can see and write to. Is it possible to create a group on all the machine and add the admins from all machines to that group or is there another way to make a share that only the admins can see and get to?

by default, everyone can see the shared fodler. You may want to remove the everyone from the shared folder and add admins only. To do that, right click on the folder and select properties and then shared.Bob Lin, MS-MVP Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN Troubleshooting on http://www.ChicagoTech.net How to Setup Windows, Network, VPN & Remote Access on http://www.howtonetworking.com

Bob Thanks for the reply. I understand everything you said but the machine will not let me add the admins from another machine, even when I try (//C-boo09-01/ Admin) using the computer name and the account name.

Assuming all computers have the same administaror account name and password, you add only local admin account.Bob Lin, MS-MVP Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN Troubleshooting on http://www.ChicagoTech.net How to Setup Windows, Network, VPN & Remote Access on http://www.howtonetworking.com

Bob I would have thought the same thing, but even when I try to connect to the machine as in mapping a drive to the machine as in (\\C-B009-08\C$) I get access denied. I have tried using the ID of the machine and Admin account (\\C-B009-08\Admin) and supply the password and still I get access denied. any thoughts?

Ok, I am still totally confused. as stated we have 15 machines all in the same workgroup, all with an administrative account named Admin, all have the same password. When I try to connect or map to the C$ I get access denied. when I try to use any of the admin tools to manage another computer I get the same thing. I even try to connect with another account and use the host name\UserID and password and still can not get connected.............. Anyone have any new suggestions?????????
