Setting the port of a VPN connection
My school accepts VPN connections on a non-standard port. Let's say the VPN server is vpn.myschool.edu, and the port is 1234. In most cases, including (if I remember correctly) the Cisco VPN Client, the port can simply be appended to the server name (e.g. vpn.myschool.edu:1234). However, using this format with Vista's VPN connection settings causes Vista to attempt to resolve the entire thing as the server name. I get an error message stating "Windows cannot find the host name 'vpn.myschool.edu:1234' using DNS".I have looked through all the settings I can find for the connection, and find nothing relating to changing the port for it. Is it possible to change the port using Vista's VPN connections?

AFAIK that is not possible if your using or trying to use the built-in PPTP VPN client. The real question is what type of VPN is your school using. I would check with them to see if they provide a specalized client for their VPN...

They use Cisco's VPN client for XP, but they haven't yet provided a version compatible with Vista. Even when I did have an XP laptop, I wasn't a fan of Cisco's client. I would much prefer to use the built-in VPN functionality, if possible.I can't imagine it would be difficult to add the ability to connect to different ports. I'd still be surprised, though very grateful, if it ever gets added.
