Set up question about XP/system and user variables
I want to set up windows XP home to a new drive with multiple partitions. XP on the C:\ and temp, programs, data, profiles on other partitions. Can I do this with system variables? How? I get "page not found" from that link. I'm not sure what you mean by "system variables" but you don't want to do this anyway. There is no point in putting Temp or Programs or user profiles on separate partitions on a single drive. If you have to reinstall Windows, you'll have to reinstall all the programs anyway. It does make some sense to put your *data* on a separate partition if you only have one hard drive (depending on the size of the drive of course) so if you have to reinstall Windows all your data remains. Of course if the drive fails it won't matter how many partitions you have. How large is this hard drive and what are you actually trying to accomplish? A better solution would be to leave all the system and program files on one partition and the *data* on a second partition or even a second hard drive. If you are concerned about protecting the data, a strong backup/recovery strategy which includes incremental imaging is more useful than partitioning.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Well I want to limit any writes to the drive that windows is on to a bare minimum. MS has sold unfinished products for, well ever. Consumer products need to be finished. Dont need to read a general electric forum to use my toster.

You can't put Temp on a different drive. If you think MS products are unfinished then there are of course alternatives. Ubuntu Linux is a very newbie-friendly distro if you don't want to buy a Mac. In any case, I'm sorry I was unable to help you. I'll bow out and perhaps someone else will have a good suggestion for you. EOT for me.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
