Server icon intermittently disappears from Network window.
I am running Windows 7 clients on a Windows Server 2003 domain with a single server. Clients can access the server with no problems. However, the icon for the server only appears in the Windows 7 Network window about half the time. When a Windows 7 client starts up, the server icon may appear in the Network window, or it may not. If it doesn't, I can type \\MyServer (where MyServer is the name of the server), and the server opens to show its shares. My question: How can I fix this, so that the server icon always appears in the Network window?

Hi, Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Please enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on both computers: 1) Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP in Windows 7: a) Go to “Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections”. b) Right-Click on the connection and choose Properties. c) Click “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Version 4” in the list. d) Click Properties, and then click Advanced. e) On the Advanced TCP/IP settings windows, go to “WINS” tab. f) Under NetBIOS setting, click “Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP”, and then click OK. 2) If the issue persists, please also enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP in Windows Server 2003 and try again. 2. On the Windows 7 computer, run the following command in an elevated command prompt to disable Windows Firewall and check the issue: Netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state off Note: you can turn back on with the command “Netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state on”. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT
