Separator Page and Windows 8

Hi

Anyone know why the standard pcl.sep file

\
\H1B\L%-12345X@PJL ENTER LANGUAGE=PCL
\H1B\L&l1T\0
\M\B\S\N\U
\U\LJob : \I
\U\LDate: \D
\U\LTime: \T
\E

works fine under windows 7 but under windows 8 we get the two separator pages. the first is the same as the windows 7 one and list the username, job, date and time. But then windows 8 prints off a second separator page that has

Username: domain\username

then in the large text you normally get

Domain Name

Username

and then job, date and time.

so the second page basically does the username bit again but with the domain prefix

Kind regards

Matt

Hi,

Could you please share the pcl.sep file to Skydrive and put the link here.

Thus I can get the sep file and test on my Windows 8 machine.

Hi,

I find the pcl.sep file in Windows 8 is

\

\H1B\L%-12345X@PJL ENTER LANGUAGE=PCL

\H1B\L&l1T\0

\U\LUsername: \J\L\\\N

\B\S\J\U

\B\S\N\U

\0

\U\LJob : \I

\U\LDate: \D

\U\LTime: \T

\E

Thats quite different with Windows 7. Try to rename this file on Windows 8, and copy the same file form Windows 7 to Windows 8 for test.

Yep sorry you're quite right the windows 8 one is quite different

however I can now see what's happening

printer being shared on Windows 2008 print server where the printer default is set with a separator page so that all student work is identified

under windows 7 and xp - the local machine just automatically seems to take the server separator page and hence just one separator page comes off

under windows 8 it's taking the separator page from the server, then running it's own local separator page and the printing the document and hence two separator pages come off. after changing the pcl.sep on windows 8 it now means both separator pages look the same.

any clues as to why windows 8 does this?

cheers Matt

I know this post is old but I found no other solutions for this issue when I came across the duplicate separator page issue with Windows 8 connecting to printers on a Server 2012 box.  I posted about it on my blog:

Ran across this issue, and Keaver3287's solution of creating a custom PCL.SEP file on the 2012 print server and using that seems to have fixed the issue.

When the Job ID line is removed from the separator page file on the server, Windows 8 will only print one page. You will need to create a custom .sep on the server, but this does fix the problem.

The Job ID line seems to trigger Windows 8 to print it's own separator page, but neither Windows 7 nor Windows Vista care if the Job ID line is in the file or not.

Curious to note: the Job ID still prints on all separator pages for all clients. Why? Because Microsoft.
