See network folder but it is empty in Vista
I have a NAS, which is a Seagate Free Agent drive attached by USB to a Linksys WRT350N router. Linksys tech support got me to the point where the partitions on the drive are visible to the network ( in Local security policy under Network security:LAN manager authentication level I set it to use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated ) which allowed me to log in to the router. Now the two partitions in the Seagate are visible in addition to the other computers on the network. However, when I click on the partition it says the folder is empty. (When I map the Seagate as a network drive on the Vista machine there is no problem seeing all the folders and files.)When I click on another computer on the network, either a Vista machine or an xp machine, all shared folders and files are available. This is the result from the Vista Ultimate machine. When I do the same from the xp pro machines I see all the shared sub folders and files of the Seagate.I believe there is some other step that must be taken somewhere to allow me to see the folders and files. Needless to say this situation makes backing up to this drive somewhat difficult, to say the least.I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions to get me straightened outDan

Hi Dan, It seems that the authentication level of the NAS is not correct with the level in Windows Vista. Since the NAS works fine in Windows XP, let's modify the authentication level of the Windows Vista system to the level that is the same as it in Windows XP systems. Launch "gpedit" in Start Search box, locate to Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Options, find the entry "Network security: LAN Manager authentication level" in the left pane, change it to Send LM & NTLM responses. If the issue persists, please check if it also occurs on other Windows Vista computers. If so, there should be Windows Visat compatibility problems in the NAS device, and you may need to make a map drive to the NAS in Windows Vista as a workaround.

That is what Linksys tech support suggested and I have already done that. That just enabled me to login to the NAS but I am still getting the empty folder message.I need to go at least one step furtherDan

Hi Dan, Linksys has suggested that you change the authentication level to "NTLMv2", and that does not correct the issue completely. Since the NAS works with Windows XP well, I suggested that you change the level to "Send LM & NTLM" that is the same as in Windows XP. It seems that the NAS does not support Windows Vista well. If the device also does not work with other Windows Vista computers, we would consider it a compatibility issue.

Hi Arthur,No Joy... I made the change and I still get empty folders for Linksys partitions and still get full detail for other machines on Network. I'm at a loss???I have a screenshot showing this but I can't see a way to "attach" itThanks,Dan

Hi Dan, I am afraid that your NAS may not work with Windows Vista because of the authentication problem. You may need to create a map for the NAS as a workaround.

Hi Arthur,I was afraid of something like that. I may just wipe the partition and do a clean reinstall to see if that works.Dan

It wasn't worth the effort. I attached an eSATA drive and do my backups to it. The other machines just have to map that drive. Thanks for you help and interestDan
