Security prevents software repair
A client has a error message when running Lenovo utilities. The problem is a file named msvrc80.dll in the folder c:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.6195_none_d09154e044272b9a. The file size is zero! I have taken ownership of the folder and the file and have been able to delete the file. But when I attempt to copy another msvcr80.dll into the folder, I am informed that I am no allowed. I have reinstalled Lenovo utilities, but that did not make any difference. I have read that som av products can block changes to system files, this one uses Norton Internet Security. Advice is very welcome. :-) Regards, NIKJRegards, nikj

Hi, First, please temporarily uninstall the anti-virus program to check the result. Meanwhile, you can use System File Checker tool to repair the system files. In addition, here are some threads about MSVCR80.dll for your reference: dllhost.exe crash with faulting module msvcr80.dll http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winservergen/thread/e1ff49e2-e9b3-4252-a794-f9105645bebf missing MSVCR80.dll isn't http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproappcompat/thread/2ddf2602-5b93-4637-bc4c-b4956aba881d Hope this helps Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support

Hi Vincent and thank you for the answer. I have replaced the damaged file! I enabled the local administrator account, changed ownership of the file to administrator, and was able to delete the damaged file. I tried to copy a non-damaged file into the library, but access was denied. I changed ownership of the directory to the local administrator, but could not get acces to the directory. So I booted the pc, and dragged a non-damaged file into the correct directory without receiving a "access denied". I tested, and it worked. Changed ownership of file and directory back to SYSTEM, and disabled the local administrator account. When the file msvcr80.dll was damaged, I could not run any backup programs, except Terabyte Unlimiteds WinImage, so I presume msvcr80.dll is a function library for backup programs. I reinstalled a needed backup program, and it works flawlessly. Vincent, do you have any further suggestions? Thank you for your help. Regards, nikj
