Security Update KB972270 leads to crash on shut down
On a Lenovo T61p with Vista Ultimate patched up to date, I tried to install a single update: Security Update for Windows Vista (KB972270). As the history log shows, that update failed: Installation date: 1/16/?2010 12:46 AM—Installation status: Failed; Error details: Code 800706BE. I rebooted for a clean start. After a very long shut down, the system crashed, did a memory dump, and then asked how I wanted to restart. After "start windows normally" the system seemed to be OK. I again tried to reboot, with the same result: long shut down, crash, memory dump, restart. Since then, I have not been able to get a clean shutdown and restart. When the system is back up, Windows notes an unexpected shutdown and proposes to look for solutions, but quits without providing any information. The update installer apparently did not set a restore point. The most recent useful restore point is 5 days ago. I tried downloading the update to try again, using the version specified for Windows Vista: Windows6.0-KB972270-x86.msu. But the installer reported "This update does not apply to your system." I also tried a System Restore (the most useful restore point was 5 days ago), even though it is not clear that a restore will address the failed update, but the restore fails with the error message: "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer’s system files and settings were not changed. Details: The creation of a shadow copy has timed out. Try again this operation. (0x81000101)." As far as I can tell, the relevant services are running. How can I get past all that and secure a clean shutdown and restart?

I had a similar problem with KB972270. Toshiba laptop with Vista Home Premium. The computer froze during installation. Trying the update again didn't help. Computer now freezes randomly. Using system restore also didn't help. I am hoping there's a solution for this or that an upcoming update will address this problem.
