Is WinXP SP2 or SP3 installed on the computer? To find out, you can right-click on My Computer & select Properties: What Windows version is displayed in the resulting General tab (e.g., Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2)? What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)? Open Add/Remove Programs & make sure the SHOW UPDATES box at the top is checked/enabled. Now scroll down & tell me if Security Update for Windows XP (KB979683) and/or Security Update for Windows XP (KB977165) is listed? ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

PA Bear MS MVP, The lap top in question has a current McAfee Total Protection program; recently loaded; but the problem was occurring before then. Let me try the steps in your last paragraph; and I'll let you know.
