Security Sheild and blocked apps all of the sudden
Hi, I recently reinstalled Win 7 business. The problem is, all my applications that were downloaded now have a blue and yellow sheild on them. I did not have this prior. I rarely connect to the internet on this PC "else I would leave it on" and prior as well as now, disabled UAC, Defender, and other steps to solve this issue. Re-downloading the apps didn't work, restarting the pc didn't work. I can't get rid of the security sheild on my icons. PLUS, if I pin an app to the task bar, the icon dissappears and leaves a blank text doc type icon. The app still works but man, this is really annoying. I have been using 7 since beta and now have business and this never happened before. I am thinking an update gone whacky. I could also run everything in admin mode prior and can't now. My account is admin so what gives? Something is not quite right and I did reinstall twice now due to this. I have XP compatability installed, etc... all updates. Not being able to run all my downloads is getting annoying to say the least. Anyway, thanks for any advice you may have. I have loved Win7 up until this point. Note: I tried on both drives to install, same issueSpecs...Win 7 business X64 "legal full"6 gigs Gskill ram ddr 200two SATA drives, WD>primaryHitache 1 tera > only backupasrock mbAMD 4200 dual coreAvira Anti Vir only currently

Run the sytem file checker, read this for more info. http://www.sevenforums.com/14392-post21.htmlNo, no update does that. But explain how you did a reinstall? Items with the shield need administrator privileges to run. Most of these things will give you a UAC pop-up or need to be run by right-clicking and choosing "run as administrator". I don't know of any way to remove the shield, but I've never tried myself. Its an indication of task or applets that might require elevated privileges. It generally means you haven't disabled UAC. Also you confuse the terms for what it is. Downloads mean just that, something you download and haven't installed. You actually mean applications taht you've installed. Well actually there is a way to remove the shield, but I'm not going to recommend that action. Now have you performed any backups prior to making all these changes - along with a system image? This would probably be a good time to do a repair/restore. What have you been download/installing - have you been running any registry fixers? Do a deep scan for virus with a quality AV (no free junk). I did a basic install, just got a new hard drive for Xmas, formatted NTFS, 100 mb put aside, and installled OS on same drive. I did back up all my info prior onto a DVD, all I really had was things like Adobe reader, Ccleaner, etc... and other things I didn't want to re-download and nothing that should be cause for alarm or that Windows should find a threat, nor did it prior. When putting downloads from the DVD onto the back up drive or my main downloads folder on my main OS drive >C:\, it would create the UAC icons even though UAC was disabled. I am quite familiar with it all and I do know how to get rid of the sheild or disable UAC and get rid of the sheild through other means which I tried , and I won't mention either, which is why I was so stumped, never had a problem before. Also, it didn't matter if I installed or not, the issue occured on the apps prior to install "meaning the setup file had the sheild, or after install with admin privilege, and the UAC remained. Now, even when I chose to run as Admin, nothing was working right, disabled everyting and still no go. The issue was this... when I backed up info from my last install, Windows was seeing it as something that needed privileges or something, I won't pretend to know why. Even if I re-downloaded the application, it would come up with the sheild until I wiped out all instances of my backed up downloads off both drives. I have done it this way for years and never had a problem so anyway, yep, as long as those apps were existing on my main drive or backup, the issue would occur. I had no infections and I am very familiar with security software and other actions which is another reason I was stumped. All these backed up downloads were from a trustable source, not some off the wall site that dishes out junk. I only connect this pc to the internet on occasion and re-enable all securities at the time, usually for windows updates but I do run the AV, AVira anti vir full version, MBAM full version, Sophos to scan sometimes just for extra measure, Spyware Terminator, and "TYPICALLY" I leave Windows Defender on and only disable UAC. So I have a specific amount of apps that I run and no more than, nothing illegal, hacked, or torrented. So why does this happen? I couldn't say but it's an annoying little issue. Had it not remained after I re-downloaded, I would have guessed an issue with the backup apps immediately, but that threw me a bit, "having to get rid of the backed up apps altogether". So after trying the other sheild removal methods, I decided to reinstall again just to be on the safe side, and everything works fine now. But thanks for the reply and maybe this will help someone else who has this issue.EDIT: one other interesting fact. "Just tried it", If I move all those downloads to the recycle bin, then take them out one by one, placing them in the downloads folder, the sheild goes away. It has to be some sort of permissions irregularity, this shouldn't happen otherwise.

Seems my issue is NOT resolved. I copied my downloads over to my other sata backup drive, no raid, etc... and some eventually get the darn secuity icon attached yet again. I set permissions for the drive and all but no love. I don't understand why Win7 is acting so funny when using SATA. I had no issues on my IDE drive and it looks like that is in fact the issue. I don't know what else it could be and I as much as I like Win 7, I am ready to go back to XP and bite the bullet on the OS. Some icons in the task bar began disappearing again as well, yet were fine on my other install before I tried on SATA drives. Another thing, which I thought was strange, when I first had my IDE hooked up, the 100 mb partition went to that drive instead of my SATA so I unhooked the IDE altogether before all this. Now, I looked again and there is no 100 mb partition for the install at all on my SATA drive or the other SATA. I don't know, all I can figure at this point is there are some permission screw ups from SATA to SATA which both are clean drives, one brand new, the other less than a year old and never used with OS, only for minor backup until now. I ran disk checks, both great. So here I go again, try to install Win 7 back onto my IDE I guess.

ok now you're telling us more than in your initial problem report. explain exactly where these downloads are being copied from (again, do not mix terms between downloads and installs). It seems to me, that yes its a permission problem in which you need to take Ownership of these files/folders of this other drive.MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. Ok, I have two drives currently, 1-80 gig WD SATA, 1- 1tb Hitache SATAHi, first of all, I have setup files... Ccleaner.exe, Adobe.exe, IMGburn.exe, and things of that nature. I copied the original "downloads or .exe files, setup files" from my downloads folder on my previous install which at the time was an 80 gig WD IDE drive, to my Hitache SATA drive along with pictures and documents. The Hitache was formatted as primary NTFS, just used for storage. Now, I wanted to install Win 7 onto my WD 80 gig SATA and use the WD IDE drive only as a backup drive as well. First, when I installed Windows 7, the 100 mb partition that is created, went to the IDE drive. Unable to move that of course without issues, I simply reinstalled, unhooking the IDE drive completely. I then deleted the WD 80 gig SATA partition and formatted it for NTFS, installed Windows 7 on it. When I went into my Hitache drive to get the "download files, exe or setup files" not "Installed files", they had the Security sheild icon on them. When I copied any of them over to my primary OS drive, Win downloads folder or anywhere else, they still kept this. I ran some of them with Admin privilege, however, they would come up with an install error, even Windows updates would not install on the first try. I finally deleted the downloads and then Windows updates would install. My son has IDE and Win 7 and the same Hitache drive as I do now, he didn't have these issues, however, If I try to go from SATA to SATA on his, he gets the sheild as well, even on a new download.
