Hi, Thank you for your post. Have you installed any software or made any change to the system before this issue occurs? Please try the following steps to resolve the issue: =========== 1. Click Start, type services.msc in the Start Search box, and press Enter. 2. In the Services console, double-click the service called Security Center, change the Startup Type to Automatic (Delayed Start), and click Start under Service status. 3. After that, please open Security Center to check if the issue is resolved. Note: Please understand that we may need to trace/debug to analyze the issue if the Security Center service cannot be started. However, debugging is out of our Forum support boundary. Thus, if we have to perform a dump analysis, a support call to our product service team is needed for the debugging service. Thank you for your understanding. I look forward to your reply. Hi Joson, Thank you for the prompt reply.... To answer your question, Yes, I did install some softwares which led to the security center closing down. Since then, I have uninstalled the software, but it hasn't helped. The suggested steps did not seem to help at all. Every time i try starting the Security center through the services window, I get the error, 1079:The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process. When I try to look at the properties window, the error message: "THE SPECIFIED DEVICE INSTANCE HANDLE DOES NOT CORRESPOND TO A PRESENT DEVICE" pops up. Though the properties window opens, any changes I try to do is met with the same pop-up: "THE SPECIFIED DEVICE INSTANCE HANDLE DOES NOT CORRESPOND TO A PRESENT DEVICE" Does this give you any clue to the cause or the solution to the problem. Thank you, Kaushik Parsha

http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/showpost.aspx?postid=2497953&siteid=17 I finally got it to work although I really am not 100% sure how. Is it harmful to just choose start for some of the things that weren't started?

Hi maglib, Thank you for your information. Generally speaking, manually start the service with the originally account (for example, start the Security Center service with the Local Service account) will not result in any bad effect. However, as the computer was infected with Trojan before, certain service or system file may have been corrupted or modified. The officially recommended method is to format and reinstall the compromised computer. Hi Kaushik Parsha, Regarding the error message "THE SPECIFIED DEVICE INSTANCE HANDLE DOES NOT CORRESPOND TO A PRESENT DEVICE", this normally means the service is not installed correctly. Thus, I suspect that the service is corrupted.
