Search Issues
I'm having an issue with the search indexer... I have about 300,000 files in a folder hierarchy that I'm indexding. The indexer has completed a pass over the files. When I search by file name, I get appropriate results. But when I search for content, I only get results within files that I've accessed. The change is immediate. If I search for a specific keyword that I know is in the files, I get no results. Then I open a file that I know has that word in it. I search again and that file now shows in results. Has anyone seen this behavior? Is this a "feature"? Any help is appreciated. Jhttp://digitalcamel.blogspot.com - .Net, ILM, SQL and Anything Else That Falls Out Of My Brain

Hi Jerry. I hope you believe misery loves company. A brief "search" (get the pun?) of this social.technet.microsoft forum yields the following: Windows 7 search - not returning file contents http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/ee40760b-4dba-474e-aa19-28088254d729/ How do you search system and Hidden files? http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/18d29d34-5b0e-468c-b959-175cfd8c0aef windows 7 search not working http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/4d853a94-328f-4c50-8719-838834d51fde/ Indexing service ( Windows Search service not running ) anymore in windows 7 RC http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/db19076b-b098-407f-8d77-3da831aab631 Searching Non Indexed locations http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/28ffd694-83d4-49c3-92b0-26a5d559302e classic search http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/44619bb4-9990-4242-b666-124be1472a9e Windows Search - Cannot find files on workstation or in email - Always shows 0 items total http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprogeneral/thread/8cf0b64b-0a74-4761-b3b5-e3b7894f9c80 So I DO believe others have seen this behavior. I think the overall consensus is that you need to buy a 3rd Party Product to get reliable search results in Win7. But admittedly, I didn't read to the bottom of ALL these threads ... only several. Thanks, p_v_s - I did a search and found some of those results... I didn'tnotice that any of them mentioned the fact that items showed up after being accessed. None of these, however offer any real solution other than to go third party. That's not really an option for my implementation. 'tis hard to believe that something like this could get past QA and into production. Thanks. J http://digitalcamel.blogspot.com - .Net, ILM, SQL and Anything Else That Falls Out Of My Brain

Aye, Jerry, I think I had seen a message in one of the previous threads that said you could find a file after it's accessed, but I didn't want to read through all those complaint messages to find it again. At any rate, I guess we can keep on hoping for what SP1 might bring ....... or Windows 8 ..... or something. I wish I could've provided a more positive reply. -pvs Windows XP Professional - 32-bit version --- Dual Booting With a Hardly-Used --- Window 7 Home Premium Retail - 64-bit version =========================================================== PC: Custom-built, SuperMicro MB - Dual Nocona Processors - 800 MHz FSB - 6GB DDR2 RAM - Approximately 5TB of internal storage on six assorted (Seagate and WD) drives using 3ware RAID Solution - ATI FireGL 7100 Video Card

Try rebuilding the search by going to the control panel and selecting Indexing Options click on Advanced and select rebuild. if that doesn't work, you may try choosing a new location for the index, the button is below the Rebuild button. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.
