Platform Power Management Capabilities:Supported Sleep States
Sleep states allow the computer to enter low-power modes after a period of inactivity. The S3 sleep state is the default sleep state for Windows platforms. The S3 sleep state consumes only enough power to preserve memory contents and allow the computer to resume working quickly. Very few platforms support the S1 or S2 Sleep states.

Thanks Mike! For other folks that might be able to offer help, Mike has a few more details in another thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/f2f97d79-918e-4d29-bf90-902b9d418208In looking at the output of powercfg, I don't see anything obvious as a blocker here. What's the screensaver timeout set to?Can you clarify what exactly the problem is that you're having here with power options?Have you tried closing your browser and then letting the machine sit for > 1 hour to see if it will suspend?Want to know if your hardware will work on Windows 7? I have the screensaver timeout set to 15 minutes and I've tried lower settings as well.If one aspect of power options means turning the monitors off, which is my main concern, that would be it. But it also never goes into sleep mode. Those are set for 60 minutes.I'll shut down the browser (Firefox) and try it. One thing that came to mind earlier is the DesktopBackground setting. If the desktop image is set to change automatically could that contribute to this? I have turned it off for awhile and the screensaver still does not come on but don't know how this might affect other power settings. Thanks,Mike

Good idea, but I wouldn't expect this to have any impact. Please capture a new powercfg trace after you try again with your browser session closed & the desktop widgets off.

Hi MikeBTP,
You can run the command powercfg /requests to check which programs or devices\drivers prevent the system goes into Sleep Mode. Refer to the following steps please.
1. Click Start, please type CMD (without quotation marks) in the Start Search bar and right click on the cmd.exe choose Run as administrator
2. The CMD command prompt windows will appear
3. Please type the following command and press Enter
powercfg /requests
What is the result?
If no useful information is found, we can confirm the issue is caused due to the driver incompatibly issue, especially the display card\chipest. I suggest you can contact Dell or ATI for further assistance.
Good Luck!
Nina

Hi Mark,Here's my latest powercfg /energy list. I turned off or shut down everything I could and set the times for 15min and 90min(screensaver) and 20min and 2hrs (turn monitor off and sleep) and nothing happened.I also checked at the nVidia forums for anything similar happening but didn't see any posts regarding this issue. Thanks

Hi MikeBTP,
I have checked your new report posted. According to the errors USB Device not Entering Suspend, we can see that the issue mostly can be caused due to some USB drivers.
I suggest remove all unnecessary USB devices (such as USB printer, flash disk, etc) and test the issue again.
In the meantime, do you have a multifunction USB mouse/keyboard? (e.g. is it have any multimedia button?) If so, have you installed correct driver for it?
Have a nice day!
Nina

Not sure if this will help or confuse...I have both x86 & x64 Windows 7. When it comes to screen-savers, sleep & such they don't both behave the same, even though set the same. Screen-saver @ 5mins; Display Off @ 15 & Sleep @ 30.The 64-bit, screen-saver comes on, monitor goes off, screen saver comes back on (forever)... nudging mouse awakens. The 32-bit, screen-saver comes on, monitor goes off... tower will APPEAR to be powered off OR mouse does nothing & power button must be pushed off & back on to awaken.Drew -

Nina - The "USB device not entering suspend" should not have any impact on the overall system not entering suspend.Mike - Again, I see nothing obvious. That ShuttleEngine software appears in the list a few times, but doesn't look like it's a blocker here. Still, wouldn't hurt to try shutting that down for a while. Also, please try much shorter timeouts while you're testing this. Like 5 minutes for screensaver, 10 for disk, 15 for standby. Some other process may be kicking off after the system being idle for a while, and just to make our lives more difficult, that process probably goes back to the idle mode again when you start using the computer :)Want to know if your hardware will work on Windows 7? Drew - When you say the 32-bit system "appears" to power off, do you mean it's suspended (generally indiciated by the power light flashing), or does it actually get shut off? After pressing the power button to resume the PC, what exactly do you see? Thanks,MarkWant to know if your hardware will work on Windows 7? Check out these links:

OK Mark,Here's what I did:Using the Services admin tool and sysinternals I shut down several services and in-memory programs that were running, even though most were used in WinXP and probably shouldn't matter, including the ShuttleEngine (which is similar to a mouse device with buttons, jog, and shuttle controls for video editing).Closed all open programsand set the times to 5-10-15 for screensaver, display, sleep. I haven't set disk times as I've never set those in any OS. I will try again with a disk setting this time. Some additional info:I have a wired Logitech trackman-scroll and a wired Microsoft keyboard. Logitech doesn't appear to have drivers for this yet but Windows 7 installed some that correctly read the brand and type of mouse. I also installed Microsoft's latest drivers for the keyboard. I have several hard drives, some internal SATA, an external eSATA, and a couple USB but I don't believe they "moved", especially since I shutdown so many other programs that I think may have caused activity (again the same programs that were used in WinXP with no power issues). I realize that the power settings in Win-7 are probably much more sophisticated than WinXP's.I'mbeginning to think that this is a Windows 7 bug as the same thing happened with Win-7 RC1 with me.I do appreciate your help with this.

Well, maybe it's worth a shot then...please try disconnecting all of your USB and eSATA devices, and see if the machine will suspend. Please run msinfo32 and post the output of that here too. Maybe it'll highlight some other thing that might be running in the background.Want to know if your hardware will work on Windows 7? Check out these links:

Mark, sorry, I never saw this 'til now...No, the power light will be 'out' PC feel, sound as if 'off'After hitting the power button it comes back on the screen as if it had been "asleep", not as if from a 'cold start'. My x64 is the same now. You would think it 'OFF' but , actually it is/was sleeping. Same whether I just walkaway or hit SLEEP from the Windows orb. It's ok, long as I know how to treat it... I know it's asleep & just push the power button & it wakes up.. it's all good. Bit different, maybe, even unexpected but, I'm ok w/ it.Drew -

Its the Shuttle. Here's an official response from Contour dated 8/6/2008:-----------------------------------------
This is a known issue with the device and is due to a keep alive signal in the unit which Vista interprets as user input. There was a similar problem with Logitech mice for which a patch was released, but unfortunately, ours goes likely beyond a simple driver update. We are looking into changes in the firmware of the device to solve this and will be updating customers when we have a solution available. If the solution requires the unit to be replaced customers will be provided various options to receive an upgraded unit at little or no cost.
I have added you to my list of customers who are awaiting this upgrade and we will contact you as soon as a solution is found.
Regards,
Jeremy Phillips

www.contourdesign.com----------------------------------------------Note that I emailed twice since then and was ignored. The problem persists in Windows 7. Note also that their web site does not mention this issue and they are still selling them claiming they work with Vista and Windows 7, without mentioning you have to unplug the device or your power-saving features never kick in! Perhaps if enough people complain they will do something about it.

Thanks for the answer - Just doing the Win7 upgrade, and found my screen blank/turn off weren't working!I was beginning to think I'd gone crazy, couldn't get screen blanking to to work no matter what I tried, and I really want my screens to go dark if I'm away...Tried disabling network and modem settings to wake the computer... nothing... tried unplugging Microsoft ergo wireless KBD... no joy... Unplugged Contour Shuttle Pro v.2, screen went dark in 1 minute as set, I'm presuming everything else will also work as expected. Windows 7 sure seems nice, already preferring in over my old XP (never did go Vista), but I guess there are a few bugs to iron out! I'll just plug in the Contour Shuttle when I'm editing I guess, for now!

Hi MikeBTP,
You can run the command powercfg /requests to check which programs or devices\drivers prevent the system goes into Sleep Mode.
Good Luck!
Nina
Wow. Didn't know it was a difficult task to get a screen saver and power settings working on Win7.I have an Acer with the ATI chipset and have the same issues. So, are we now pointing the finger at the hardware and it's not a SW issues except with Win7?Should I just go back to WinXp or may be get a Mac ?

For what it's worth, I am running Win 7 Ent on a HP8510p laptop on an HP docking station and have not been able to get the screensaver to work ever since unless it was undocked. Obviously this led me to the numerous plugged in USB devices one of them being a Belkin f8e837 multimedia keyboard. I looked it up on the Windows 7 Compatibility site which stated info coming soon. Swapping it with a basic USB keyboard resolved my issue.

I never got the screen saver and power settings to work on my ATI video chipset equipped PC even with their latest updates. PC is only 2 months old.I have no problem with my Desktop that has Nvida video chipset with Win7.I guess Microsoft is pointing the finger at the hardware manufacturers to get their drivers to work with Win7 but who knows when that will take place or if it will take place.

BTW, I finally got hold of them regarding the upgrade program. I was able to "upgrade" my ShuttleXpress for $25 (+ cost of shipping them the old one) to the newest shuttleXpress (which is identical in appearance and features). The cost of upgrading
the Shuttle Pro 2 is $50, I think. The screen saver works now while the device is plugged in.

I used "powercfg /energy" as suggested and it found that the cause is Synergy
System Availability Requests:Display Required Request
The program has made a request to prevent the display from automatically entering a low-power mode.
