Screen keeps auto-rotating upside down on its own

 Hi experts,

I have an issue that is really extremely annoying since last few days. Screen on my Dell XPS 12 keeps auto-rotating upside down when a laptop stands still. It mostly happens when I switch between windows, say with alt+tab or just by clicking on another application on the taskbar. Sometimes it happens all the time, sometimes stops. I have to go ctrl+alt+arrrow all the time to correct. Any idea how to pinpoint the issue? Would it possible be OS related?

The Auto-Rotate button controls the Gyro Sensor on the system; hence in case of problems with screen rotation, the following troubleshooting steps can be performed.

  1. Press the Auto-Rotate button and attempt to rotate the screen. If the Auto-Rotate feature is turned off, user will face an issue with the screen rotation. If you do not feel the button action as you normally do, the I/O daughter-board should be replaced.
  2. Some applications conflict with the Gyro Sensor, try uninstalling any apps that were recently installed.
  3. If the above steps fail, refresh the operating system , which will ensure that despite restoring to factory settings, data is preserved.
  4. If the above steps fail, the system board will have to be replaced as the Gyro Sensor is located on the system board.

 Good morning,

Thank you for your response. There is no Auto-Rotate button but i can flip the screen by pressing and it works just fine. The system was actually refreshed recently, as the computer crashed. So there is not so many applications to look at, I might try uninstalling apps but it would be great to know which ones to start with, as it is quite a hassle to uninstall all of them for no apparent reason searching in the dark. The issue is exactly the following:

Screen flips upside down whenever I:

- press alt+tab and change the application to some other screen(say firefox to desktop)

- click on the taskbar and change the application to some other screen(say firefox to desktop)

It doesn't happen in the other direction, meaning when the screen is already upside down and I change to another screen in any of the ways it doesn't go back. Motherboard has been also replaced few months ago by Dell tech, as there were some other problems with the computer. Any idea where to start troubleshooting?

Make sure all the drivers are updated. I shall suggest you to go for a Clean boot.

Re. from a forum:

1. Put the screen in tablet mode 2. Push the screen rotate lock button (in Locked mode) 3. Take your xps and rotate so that the screen is the other way around 4. With this position, press de rotate lock button again (unlocked mode) 5. The screen rotation starts to work fine

If the above doesn't help then I shall suggest you to get the device inspected by a DELL Techn

I'll try to remember the steps I took to resolve this issue and get back.  It's an issue with some drivers and if you do a refresh it might come back.

Edit: try this http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=7P8X2&osCode=WB64A&fileId=3290061153&languageCode=EN&categoryId=UT

 Hey,

Cool, I'll check this out. At the moment again the issue seem to have stopped for a while, as it is intermittent, I'll monitor the situation and let's see if I still face the problem
