Screen Freezes every time I try to open a file dialogue window in an application.
For example, just now I tried to upload a Avatar image. I click "Browse" and then the system just freezes for like 20 seconds, can't move the mouse or do any thing. This happens in almost all applications including Paint which came with Windows 7.I have had all the updates installed. I wonder why this is.Please help. I don't want to go back to XP, it'll take a full month before RC comes out. What should I do?- Pulped

Start the Task Manager. Click on Show processes from all users. Click on CPU so that the processes using the most CPU time are at the top. Cause the problem to occur and see which process moves to the top while the computer is frozen. I suspect it's an antivirus or security program.Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Hey Kerry, thanks for the message. I have tried Task Manager but have not found any process occupying the CPU a whole lot. Apparently something is stopping the Windows Explorer from being as responsive as it should. When I try to open a Windows Explorer window it's the same annoying wait. During the freeze if I have the Task Manager on, I would see the CPU/Memory indexes on the Windows Explorer absolutely idle. It should be moving a little I guess? The AV software I am using is an Windows 7 approved version of CA eTrust. Since I have been using this Windows 7 installation for 2 months now and this problem came up just 2 weeks ago and eTrust has been on it the whole time since 2 months ago. I suspect if this is due to something else.Any idea? Thanks.- Pulped

It sounds like some add-on for Explorer/Internet Explorer. The first thing I would try is to completely uninstall Ca eTrust. If that doesn't fix it you can re-install it. Let us know if that's not the fix. Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Does the issue occurs in Safe Mode and Clean Boot? For your reference: Clean Boot =========================== 1. Click Start, type MSCONFIG in the Search Bar and Press Enter to start the System Configuration Utility. 2. Click the Services tab, check the Hide All Microsoft Services box and click Disable All (if it is not gray). 3. Click the Startup tab, click Disable All and click OK. 4. Restart the computer and test the issue. If the problem does not occur in Clean Boot, it indicates that the problem is related to one application or service we have disabled. You may use the MSCONFIG tool again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to narrow down the problem. Thanks.

Hey thanks Kerry and Robinson, Sorry for the late reply. Actually a couple of days after I posted the original message the problem went away itself. I didn't change any registry items nor did I uninstall any software. I can not remember whether windows update installed any updates but.. hey it's working normally now. Thanks a lot for your replies, I wish you all a lovely weekend. -Fish- Pulped
