Schedule Software install at Windows startup

Quite often when you want to install/update software, dependent applications (like office, Internet Explorer, etc.) have to be closed. F.ex. when you want to update Java, you have to exit Internet Explorer.

I was wondering if there is a way to schedule scripted-software installations to run at system startup. Actually just like Windows Updates, when you start Windows it runs the installation and counts up to 100%. When done you get the logon box.

I would like to find a way to schedule new software to install the same way, so when the user is working he or she receives the install script / command in the background, it gets scheduled somehow for installation at next boot sequence and then the user only gets to logon after the installation finished.

Thanks for any advice!

Well you could make a computer start up script. If you chose this one make sure you script as some sort fo validation so it doesn't try to install every time you boot.

You could use GPO Assign Software: Assign software - A program can be assigned per-user or per-machine. If its assigned per-user, it will be installed when the user logs on. However, if its assigned per-machine then the program will be installed for all users when the machine starts.

You can use this powershell toolkit: http://psappdeploytoolkit.com

They have coded inside a popup that warn the user that a application need to close.

Can I put my own installation instructions in C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml?

Hi Geoffrey,

It is not recommended to modify the pending.xml manually.

Why you dont want to edit your pending.xml to resolve 0xC0000034 issues
