SVChost.exe cpu issue with XP Pro after trojan removal
My sister recently downloaded a virus to my machine. I removed the trojan and have been having issues with SVChost.exe start eating CPU time. This is usually triggered when i start up Firefox. It may be unrelated, but I don't think so. I did do a uninstall/reinstall on Firefox, and now it will blip briefly in the process tab of task manager, but it goes away almost immediately. I do have service pack 3 on my machine, so I don't think it's the SVChost issue that service pack 3 fixed. I did run a repair of XP once I nuked the trojan. I ran it through the zone alarm virus scan, adaware, and malwarebytes to make sure the thing was gone gone gone. I did a check on what is in the regedit for svchost, and it has the following:default reg_sz dcomlaunch reg_multi_sz dot3svc reg_multi_szdot3svc reg_multi_szeapsvcs reg_multi_szgetplushelper reg_multi_szhttpfilter reg_multi_szimgsvc reg_multi_szlocalservice reg_multi_sznetsvcs reg_multi_sznetworkservice reg_multi_szrpcss reg_multi_sztermsvcs reg_multi_szwudfservicegroup reg_multi_sz I've been doing some research, and I am not sure where to go next. I think that it's a registry issue maybe, or a corrupt svchost, but since I have service pack 3, I am not sure if there is something else I can do, especially since the issue seems to start happening when I start up Firefox. Don't use Firefox may be an answer, but I'd really like to make sure that the issue is resolved so that my computer doesn't get corrupted any more than it already is. I've seen programs in my searches that will supposedly fix your registry, but they seem to be more malware sites, so I am leery of downloading anything that is not specifically from Microsoft. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I might want to do next? Everything I've read seems to point to the problem, but not the solution. Thanks for taking the time to look at this!Beki1 person got this answerI do too

I re-ran all of my antivirus programs and I made sure to clear my cache and temp files. I did clear up the registry and system files. I think the real culprit was Zone alarm. They have this new feature called force shield. I didn't realize it had a cache that needed to be cleared out. So, the registry did need to be cleared up, but the Firefox problem was related to my firewall program. My machine has been running well for the past half hour with no slow down or my cpu sessions being overloaded. I am going to run a defrag over night just to make sure. But it looks like everything is copacetic. Thank you two so much for looking at this for me. I've not had a virus in 10+ years and I had forgotten what little I did know. Beki
