SP2 - Since install, Vista logs me out automatically
I installed Vista SP2 last night on my HP desktop (32-bit). It has made one change which I hate and cannot find a fix for: After 20-30 minutes of not being used, I'm automatically logged off. No programs are closed, there's no shut down/reboot. It just reverts to the Vista logon screen and I have to log back in. I have checked all the settings I know of: security, power management, advanced power management, screensaver, etc. Everything is "turned off": no screen saver, no shut down/sleep after xx minutes, no keyboard keys mapped to sleep/shutdown, etc. Is there something I'm overlooking? Or is this a new "feature"? If so, I don't like it. At all. Thanks for your help. BrentBrent

Hi, Thank you for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum. Power issue can be related to several reasons. For further troubleshooting, please help collect more information. 1. Is Windows Vista SP2 installed successfully? Do you receive any error message while Windows SP2 installation? I would like to suggest that you perform System Restore to the time without Windows Vista SP2, then reinstall Windows Vista SP2 with security software such as Windows Firewall disabled. 2. Are programs still running after logging on back again? If so, the computer didnt log off but was set to sleep mode. 3. Is there any third party power management program installed on your computer? If so, please disable this program and see if the issue occurs. 4. Is there any removable device connected to this computer? Try to unplug this device and see if the issue occurs. To move on, I would like to propose the following suggestions. 1. Check for Windows Updates. 2. Restore the default power plan settings. 3. Boot in Safe Mode, and see if the issue occurs. If it doesn't occur, it might be related to third party program. Try to do a clean boot and find the exact issue. How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com//kb/929135 4. Open a run prompt to run the following command line to list power settings, then paste this information in this thread. If i stop working for more than a few seconds, say long enough to readtwo paragraphs,i am logged out back to the main vista screen. It is not "sleep mode" unless Microsoft has changed the way a computer goes to sleep e.g. not shutting the os down at, not powering down ANYTHING on the computer. There is no setting to stop this? There were NO problems during my sp2 install.I disabled ALL security software, inluding Windows Firewall, during the install. This has only started happening AFTER the sp2 install. I really don't think this is a power setting issue,as none of the listed symptoms was even mentioned in th KB article you linked to.Did you read the origonial post, or did you just copy/paste the standard "Power Issues in Vista" response?*UPDATE* After wasting six and a half hours reinstalling SP2 three times, I still have the same problem. It is not an issue with the set up, it is an issue with the SP. Any response, other than anothr copy/paste job form the Knowadge Base, would be helpful. Heck at this point I'd almost be happy if they would just addmit the problem exists.

I have this problem too, Windows Vista 64.Mine hasn't shut off 20 to 30 minutes after basic use though. It locked the computer the first night installed after I turned the monitor off and about 20 minutes passed. once I noticed this(I heard the logout music) I re=logged back into the computer and looked for any settings that may have changed it, but found none and turned the monitor off and went to bed, it did not lock or log out after. The next night it logged off about 20 mins after turning off the monitor again at 1:00 am, I did not check it when I heard it log out.I did not see any errors when installing. I have the exact same problem after installing SP2 and have been checking back at this thread for answers. I have an HP m9000t Q6600 desktop 3GB with Vista Home Premium. The 3rd Party software idea does see to have some merit since another poster here mentioned an HP laptop. I'll be testing that safe boot idea soon. But has anyone had any solutions at all they can post here in the meantime?
