Running unsigned executable from network location
Our developers have an application that they distribute to our users with a crude self-extracting zip executable. This file isn't signed, it is run from a network location, and it extracts to a subdirectory of Program Files. This is a domain
environment and the clients are predominately Windows 7 Enterprise. This has always worked in the past, but now I've got a couple of users who get a message that Internet settings have blocked the application. Attempting to run the application
(from the network location) as Administrator also gives this warning. If I copy the file to the user's desktop, it will run - on one desktop I tried this with, it ran without issue, and on one other it prompted to confirm I wanted to run an unsigned
application.
We've made no changes in our UAC settings or any other security group policy. Accepting for the moment that this method is poor form in the first place, does anyone know if there was a recent Windows Update that tightened up the security in this scenario?
Other than switching to an MSI distribution (I've been trying to get them to do this for years), any other suggestions?

Hi,
Could you please share me the whole warning or error message?
According to your description, I suggest to perform these tests to troubleshoot the issue:
1 Logon with Safe Mode with networking
2 Temporary disable firewall and antivirus
3 Temporary disable UAC
I suspect the firewall setting block the program. And if the issue persists, you can also try to perform a system restore on one machine for test.
Hope that helps.

The exact dialog we get is one with a yellow/orange bar saying "These files can't be opened. Your Internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened."
Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to replicate the issue currently. One of the users seems to be working just fine now and the other gets a dialog asking her to confirm that she's about to change files on her computer (which I would expect since
this extracts to Program Files).
Our group policy turns off the Windows firewall on the LAN, so that's not it. If I see the issue again I'll try turning UAC off and/or modifying the IE Intranet security settings.

Hi,
If the issue occurs, you can also refer these similar threads:

Someone fixed it by modify the registry and also perform reset IE advanced settings.
Hope that helps.

What's somewhat concerning is that the issue seems to have resolved itself as quickly as it appeared. This makes me think malware, but there's no other particular indication of that. If it resurfaces, I'll try fiddling around with the IE security
settings. We're now signing the executable using our Windows Server CA, so that should probably help.
Thanks.
