Recently had a disk wipe/reinstall done on my XP desktop computer. Use automatic updates, so whatever the current service pack is, I think 3. My desktop management software for my Palm M515 won't fully reinstall. It goes onto yhe machine, but won't connect through the docking mechanism to the Palm so as to populate schedule etc.Do you mean that your desktop software won't install or that you can't HotSync? I assume that you mean the latter.First, if you are using Palm Desktop software, you should use version 4.1.4 for the M515, and not more a recent version. You can look at this HotSync Troubleshooting page , but some of the links there don't work.Unfortunately, Palm no longer supports its older PDAs, and seems to have deleted all of the articles concerning these devices from its Knowledge Base. You can, however, ask questions in thePalm Forums . You are more likely to get help there than here in the Windows forums. The early HotSync cradles for the M515 were recalled because they had a problem with static electricity causing the USB chip in the M515 itself to become disabled. When this happened, HotSync using a USB connection would fail (it wouldn't connect to the computer). If you had a serial HotSync cradle or cable, however, you could HotSync with that ($5 from Amazon -- but your computer must have a serial port and not all new computers do). I believe that HotSync through InfraRed also worked, but I don't have first-hand knowledge of that. The static electricity problem is more likely to happen when the humidity is low, which is probably not the case now if you are living in the U.S., but it's still possible. The fix for the disabled USB chip was to completely power down the M515. When the M515 was completely powered down, the chip was reset. Of course, when the M515 was completely powered down, all data and applications stored on the device were erased. At the time of that recall, Palm offered owners of the M515 an expansion card that had a backup/restore application and a second application that was a continuously looping program that caused the M515 to bypass the automatic low-power shut off and thus completely drained the battery. You would backup the data to the expansion card, run the loop program overnight for 8 hours or more, recharge for another 2 hours, and then restore from the expansion card. You can try a hard reset (which also will erase all data from the M515), but I expect that that's not sufficient. If a hard reset would work, Palm probably wouldn't have instructed people with this problem to spend 10 hours discharging and recharging the battery. I would be surprised if you could still get this expansion card from Palm. However, I did find a post from about a year ago that suggested otherwise, so you might be in luck (they may want to charge you $25):To obtain the Palm Hotsync Reset Card, you will need to personally contact our voice Support team.
