Running Windows XP SP2 with IE8. Had Norton 360 process ccSvcHst.exe consuming CPU. Upgraded Norton to version 4.0.__Now IE8 is very unstable, different processes consuming CPU even with Norton turned off.__
I opened a support case with Norton a couple of days ago, for a problem with their process ccSvcHst.exe cripling my system by consuming my CPU. I found that it was a common problem, and so I wanted Norton to address it. Their support guy accesed my system remotely, and made some changes to my configuration utility and my registry files, and then upgraded my version to their current version 4.0After the support session had ended, I eventually rebooted my system, and recieved an error about my configuration utility being in a diagnostic state, and that I should put it back into a normal mode and reboot again. I noticed that he had disabled the start of my services. I selected a normal start and rebooted. The problem with ccSvcHst.exe consuming my CPU has now been resolved - only to be replaced by different processes consuming my CPU, and extremely heavy memory usage (or mis-usage). The offending processes are mostly explorer.exe and iexplore.exe. Not only that, but this current problem exists even when I turn Norton completely off. I tried logging another case with them, but they won't address the issue since the problem (now) exists even without Norton running. So, basically, they made the problem worse, and then pushed it onto Microsoft to resolve it. That is really nice... Anyone have any ideas?1 person got this answerI do too

It sounds like your computer is infected. I get this from the fact that iexplore.exe (Internet Explorer) is running. If you didn't start IE yourself, then that is a clear symptom of malware infection. Go through these general malware removal steps systematically - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware Include scanning with David Lipman's Multi_AV and follow instructions to do all scans in Safe Mode. Please see the special Notes regarding using Multi_AV in Vista. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Multi-AV - instructions http://tinyurl.com/yoeru3 - download link and more instructions When all else fails, get guided help. Choose one of the specialty forums listed at the first link. Register and read its posting FAQ. PLEASE DO NOT POST LOGS IN THE MS FORUMS. If you can't do the work yourself (and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea), take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be aware that not all local shops are skilled at removing malware and even if they are, your computer may be so infested that Windows will need to be clean-installed. If possible, have all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Why not install SP3? Also note that there is a compatibility problem between XP and IE8. I had to remove IE8 and go back to IE7.

That is good news and you did the right thing anyway. "Spica4038" gave you incorrect advice because trying to install a service pack onto an infected machine is a recipe for disaster. It will not remove the malware and will, if the installation even goes through, thoroughly b0rk the machine. And there is no "compatibility problem between XP and IE8". Something is wrong with his/her computer. I'm glad to hear that you were able to remove the malware and install SP3 onto your now-clean machine. Thanks for taking the time to let me know. Had the same problems after installing IE8. Could not get IE8 onto the internet, my Firefox was fine so I knew that I didn't have a network connection problem. The problem was Norton Internet Security 2009 didn't like the upgrade from IE6 to IE8. All I did was reinstall Norton Internet Security and everything is working fine. Hope this help anyone else having problems after upgrading to IE8.
