Running Vista Home Premium 32 SP 2 and need to make local network connection set PRIVATE Permanent.
I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 SP2. Every time the system reboots or comes out of hibernate, my it goes back to a "Public" connection which breaks my HD Homerun connectivity. I am using wireless connection for Internet and local network and have a direct connect wired LAN connection to my HD Homerun, dedicating that LAN to video. I have searched high and low and cannot find where this can be set as a Private connection permanently in Vista. I have seen another post from 2007 with a similar request that has gone unanswered.

Hi, I suggest going to change the network location type via the group policy: 1. Start –> run –> MMC –> press enter 2. In MMC console , from menu file select Add/Remove Snap-in 3. Select Group Policy Object editor –> Press Add –> select Local computer –> press OK –>press OK 4. Open Computer Configuration –>Windows Settings –>Security Settings –>select “Network list manager policies” on the right Side you will see options for: double click “Unidentified networks” Then you can select the option to consider the Unidentified networks as private and if user can change the location. After that, please check if the issue persists. If the above step doesn’t resolve the issue, please boot in Safe Mode with networking and see if the issue persists. If not, please also boot to Clean Boot environment to determine the possible cause. Hi Sabrina, Thank you for the reply and please pardon my ignorance. I have seen this response elsewhere, but when I get into MMC, there is no "Group Policy Object Editor" to be found in the snap-in list. This is the only time I have ever used MMC so I do not know if there is an interim step to be done or it just is not available in Vista Home Premium 32bit edition. I looked it up in help and it shows it should be one of the default snap-ins but it is not in my list - I have scrolled up and down a dozen times looking for it. I also do not see "computer configuration" anywhere. I thought you possibly meant "System configuration" but there is not a "Windows settings" option in that screen. Thank you for the help. Dave

Hi Dave, Thank you for your response. I understand that there is no Group Policy Object editor in your Windows Vista Home. I am sorry to say that I did not notice your system version. The Group Policy only applies to the Business, Ultimate and Enterprise editions. Base on the current situation, you may try the following steps to check the registry keys: Before modify the registry keys, please take a backup of the key. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, please click the following link to view the article: Back up the registry Please check the following value to set the Network Location manually: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Signatures (REG_DWORD): Category set to 0 or 1 0 = Public 1 = Private Please go to check it and restart the computer to test.
