Router Trouble
I'm having trouble connecting a new PC to a home network. The PC is running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Ipconfig displays the following: Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Tunnel adapter isatap.{7C199852-2C26-4234-AEE4-319D9CAF3F2D}: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : When I select Control Panel --> Setup A New Connection or Network --> Set Up A New Network, no router is ever detected. The router is a Mulitech RouteFinder (model RF550VPN - no wireless capability), which is probably 7 to 8 years old. There is another PC running Windows XP Pro that is connected to this router and it successfully connects. When I connect the Windows 7 PC directly to the cable modem, the PC can access the Internet, so there doesn't appear to be a problem with the network cable or a physical problem with the PC's network port. I don't believe the problem lies with the router's LAN ports either, because I've tried connecting the Windows 7 PC to the same LAN port that works with the XP PC. Is it possible that Windows 7 is simply incompatible with this older router? Are there any Windows 7 network settings I should try changing before I buy a new router?

Windows 7 works fine with address translation (NAT). Make sure your box has NAT enabled and DHCP enabled. A newer box will perform better. Please temporary disable antivirus and firewall, then check the result. If the issue persists, please manually assigh an IP address for the computer. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Does your internet connection/ISP require you to input username and password? If is require then you would need to input that on the router config page itself before it can be detected and get connected to the net If the above doesn't work, reset the router setting to default and try accessing it again

ipconfig says the media is disconnected, meaning as far as it is concerned you don't even have layer 1 connectivity. Are you seeing any link lights on your PC and/or router's interface? You might need to look at the kind of Cat5 cable you're using (i.e. cross-over or straight-through). Newer switches and routers are able to detect the difference and change the way they transmit/receive accordingly while older devices were very particular about the right cable being used. I suggest Cat 6A cable for replacements, it can support faster speeds My MVP is for the Windows Desktop Experience, i.e. Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 IT Remote Assistance is available for a fee. After trying a number of things, I ended up buying a new router and that solved the problem. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.
