Roaming Profile size - index.dat
Hi There couple of our domain users are having issues with their roaming profile exceeding the allowable size limits. the index.dat file size is going between 9 and 11 Mbytes. i know that file records all the websites visited information. is there a way to disable this file from growing through GPO? also, how can we reset this file without recreating the profile from scratch? i tried to use a tool that was used in Windows XP but its not working with Windows 7 64bit Enterprise. the file location is appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows\privacIE\index.dat Thanks,

Hi, I notice you already posted a similiar thread before http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ieitprocurrentver/thread/1ad00416-20d4-4bcd-a04c-b1d5b5988fe1 . Meantime, the thread is already marked. I need to confirm whether the solution provided by the MVP does work? Hi Juke the solution provided is not sutiable in our case now. i managed to find the GPO that will diasable the InPrivate data collection but my concern now how to reset the index.dat file under the user profile without the need to reset the whole profile. i downloaded the tool that was mentioned in the article provided and try it on to see if it will work in Windows 7. i will mark the incident as answered if the tool will run successfully Regards,

Hi IT Officer, this is huge problem in our organization. If you disable InPrivate data collection via GPO does the problem go away? (what's the path?) I know there are a few index.dat files, but it's always the one here appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows\privacIE\index.dat that is around 15MB and so takes up 1/2 of the user profile limit. There are a lot of results if I search Google for this issue, but no real answers of how to fix it. It doesn't seem as common as it should be. We get calls at the service desk, and just delete and users index.dat file, but it builds back up eventually.
