Right click crash
When I right click on a file or folder in the left pane of file explorer, it crashes immediately. This happens on both of my Ultimate x64 win7 systems. To clarify - explorer crashes

Running explorer as admin seems to have resolved the crashing issue. Is there a way to run it as admin by default?

Hi, please download this reg file from my SkyDrive: http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/WER%5E_Explorer.reg and make a double click on the file to import it. When the explorer crashes, Windows Error Reporting Service creates a dmp file under C:\Localdumps. Please upload the file to your public Skydrive folder and post the link here. I take at the dump, maybe I can see the cause. André"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

It seems that shortcut doesn't work as expected, i need to manually run explorer in admin mode for it not to crash. On the bright side, I only need to do this once until i logout or reboot. The method of this madness eludes me The file was not created, but here are the details from the crash: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: Explorer.EXE Application Version: 6.1.7600.16450 Application Timestamp: 4aebab8d Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll Fault Module Version: 6.1.7600.16385 Fault Module Timestamp: 4a5be054 Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 000000000004eab0 OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: e4b1 Additional Information 2: e4b1384f247b2b09faf183c300d6a909 Additional Information 3: 6aa2 Additional Information 4: 6aa26b0b31b6c0d82dd2ae65fc118f12 oops, was looking for a file instead of a folder... Hi, This issue can be caused by third party program. I suggest testing it in Clean Boot mode first. If it persists, try following tool to remove third party extension: ShellExView: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.zip Please also update device drivers and BIOS to latest version. hope it helps.Vivian Xing - MSFT

Thank you Vivian That site does contain some usefull utilities; however, the crash also happens in safe mode. I have already updated to all the latest available drivers. I have also installed windbg and the 2 x64 symbol packages(checked & retail) and specified the paths windbg tells me that i'm not using the correct symbols. What other symbol package is there?

Hi, you are using the tool Classic Shell and this causes the crash. Uninstall it please. André"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

The crashes started before I installed classic shell. I have tried it with and without - no difference. It also happens on my other system which never had classic shell installed (same OS, different hardware) As I have stated in my previous post, the crashes also happen in safe mode. It works fine in admin mode and any subsequent instances (admin or not) until i logout or reboot. It seems to me there is some sort of internal glitch.

Hi, the crashes occur at the function GetCommandString. Please run ShellExView (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html) and disable all shellextensions (Agnitum Outpost Security Suite Pro, WinRAR, Alcohol 120). Do you now still have crashes? if not, one of those extensions causes the crash. So try a bit which one is causing the crashes and check for Updates. I'm glad you mentioned winrar, it's like a second skin The latest version solves the problem Thank You How did you extrapolate that info from the dump?

I can use a command inside WinDbg to list all loaded modules and I saw this 3 potential causes. And WinRAR is a good candidate for such crashes. Great that it is sloved for you :) Enjoy your Windows 7. André"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

After a reboot the crashing started again... Further investigation narrowed it down to the nvidia cpl context menu extension nvshext.dll After many reboots and right clicks I am confident that this is the solution. All other apps work as expected.
