Restore from System Image
I have a hard disk with two partitions, one for my Windows 7 installation and one for my Media files. I want to make a system image of my Windows partition only using the Backup and Restore feature in Windows 7 (a backup of the files on the Media partition would require more space than I currently have). How can I create a system image of the Windows partition only so that I can later use it to restore to the the same hard disk that Windows is currently installed on (which also contains a partition with my Media files), without losing the files on the Media partition?

You can use the wbadmin utility from commandline to specify detailed parameters for your backup or restore. Make sure to run it from an elevated prompt!MCSA/MCTS/MCP

Open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Backup and Restore, choose “Create a system image”. Follow the instruction you will find that you are able to only backup system partition.Arthur Xie - MSFT

That doesn't answer the original question. I also have a similar setup in that I have an O/S partition & a data partition. When attempting to restore a system image (which was only the O/S) the restore utility wanted to format the data partition as well.

As BrowniMFC said, neither of these answer the question. Do you even read the entire question before you answered?

As BrowniMFC said, neither of these answer the question. Do you even read the entire question before you answered? No. When you restore from image backup, all data that is not in the system partition will not be removed. Unless your restore image is from OEM but not created by yourself. You just do a system image backup. You can also include the image backup in the scheduled backup. Please refer: Win7 System Image - All Logical Drives Are SelectedArthur Xie - MSFT
