Restore System Restore after using DisableSR in unattended setup
How do I re-enable System Restore after using DisableSR in an unattended setup? I get the following error: "System Restore encountered an error. Please try to run System Restore again. (0x81000203)" Either System Restore or VSS has still been making backups even though disabled and so I don't think DisableSR properly disabled it.

My mistake the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service was disabled.

This behavior is by design. DisableSR will limits the ongoing usefulness of System Restore on the computer. To re-enable, please try: 1. Open gpedit.msc from Start Search box.2. Navigate to the following branch. Computer Configuration\Administrative Template\System\System Restore. 3. In the right pane, please configure the Turn off system restore policy. Please set it to Not Configured.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Author: I have been experiencing the same condition where I am unable to either create restore points or perform restores with the same error condition ("System Restore encountered an error. Please try to run System Restore again. (0x81000203)"). I set the "Turn off system restore" policy to "Not Configured," but continue to experience the same error condition. I was wondering if you might have any other suggestions or recommendations (I feel like I am walking a tight rope without a net). Is it conceivable that a corrupted or incorrect registry setting could be causing this problem? Thanks, Shawn

I have just cured this problem on my W7 system. Click on > Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Services Microsoft Shadow Copy Protection Service was disabled so reset to "Automatic". Problem solved.

Thanks so much for this solution. The others didn't work for me (searching for gpedit.msc came up with nothing) but your simple instructions solved my System Restore problem!

the1knight SOLUTION Fixed my problem. Click on > Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Services Microsoft Shadow Copy Protection Service was disabled so reset to "Automatic". Problem solved. This worked to fix my 0x81000203 System Restore problem. On Win7 Ultimate HP Laptop. Nice thing is that after applying the corrective action ALL the restore points are again visible! Thank you so much!!! Jim Leggiere (JLeggy)
