Restore Default Profile.
I actualy have several questions arround this same issue but I'll try to stick to the one I am currently working on. I found Microsoft's instructions for creating a customized Default User in Windows 7. I have tried it once and experienced some problems, like every account having a black background. What I want to know is how can I restore the original Default User from a backup copy?tweaton

Hi Tweaton, to customize default user profile, please follow the KB article: How to customize default user profiles in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973289 Sean Zhu - MSFT

Thank you Sean. Actually I have tried that, in fact that's part of the problem. After using sysprep to modify the default profile I experienced problems when I tried to logon as a new user. sometimes the task bar would be black, or the background would be black, or both. When I tried to change the theme or the background those options were locked so that I could not change them. What I need to know is how to restore the default, Default profile.tweaton

Tweaton, i had the same problem. My was a permissions issue. When if you load the default user's registry hive, and go to the following key, DefaultUserHive>ControlPanel>Desktop>Wallpaper. Make sure the path given forthe wallpaper is readable for all users. Hope this helps. Joe

Joe, I did a search on DefaultUserHive in the registry and I can't find it. I tried DefaultUser and I got a few hits but none of them look anything like what you are talking about. Could you be more specific. Thanks Tomtweaton

Joe is talking about this location: [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop] ...Though that didn't work for my customer. They had done some funny business with the c:\users\default folder. We replaced this folder with a known good from another workstation and all was well. Mike Crowley | MVP My Blog -- Planet Technologies
