Replacing OneCare
I use Windows Live OneCare through Qwest and need to change programs since it is being discontinued. I know there's really nothing out there that replaces OneCare and I've researched the boards for other options. All I really need to know is how to protect my computer and I'm wondering if these programs will provide protection and can be used together:AvastPrevxzonealarmmalwarebytesDo I need all of these? Do I also need to use MSE? I am running Windows XP. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.1 person got this answerI do too

Thanks. There are three categories of security software:FirewallAnti-VirusAnti-spywareTaking them one at a time:1. Firewall. I recommend that you use the built-in Windows firewallrather than ZoneAlarm or any other third-party firewall.2. Anti-virus. For an anti-virus program, I recommend eSet NOD32, ifyou are willing to pay for it. If you want a free anti-virus, Irecommend one (only one; do not run more than one anti-virus program)of the following three: AviraAvastMicrosoft Security Essentials 3. Anti-spyware. I recommend that you download and install (bothfreeware) MalwareBytes AntiMalware and SuperAntiSpyware. Ken Blake

Hi evsk281,In addition to what Ken Blake mentioned, I would recommend you to use Microsoft Security Essentials. It is a FREE security software that is being updated twice a day. Plus, the latest engine of Microsoft Security Essentials now incorporates an Active X that would prevent malicious attacks that make use of the Internet access. There's no need to install additional security software once you have Microsoft Security Essentials. It will do everything for you to have a safe-computing device. If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Propose as Answer" If you find it helpful , mark it as helpful by clicking on "Vote as Helpful" button at the top of this message. It's not the verybest, but it's among the very good ones, and like a couple of theothers I recommended, it's free.It is a FREE security software that is being updated twice a day. It will do everything for you to have a safe-computing device. But I strongly disagree with that. No piece of security software isperfect or gets you anywhere near perfectly safe. What you do on the computer is always important; you also need topractice safe hex. Moreover, it's always wise to run multipleanti-spyware programs (but not multiple anti-virus), since none ofthem is perfect. So even if you run Microsoft Security Essentials, I still stronglyrecommend that you also run MalwareBytes AntiMalware andSuperAntiSpyware.Ken Blake

Thank you v-6jayde for your input, but I had tried to install MSE and kept getting a box that said I had other anti-virus software on my computer. No matter what I removed or cleaned up it would not run. But that's okay since I took Mr. Blake's suggestions and found some programs I am quite happy with.

We're glad that Ken and I were able to assist you. By the way, you mentioned that MSE tells you that there is still another security software being detected that is why you can't install it? Can you tell what were the security software you have had? It appears that there are still remnants of those security software. If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Propose as Answer" If you find it helpful , mark it as helpful by clicking on "Vote as Helpful" button at the top of this message. The only security software I've ever had on my computer was OneCare. But I removed that and ran the cleanup utility for it so I'm not sure what MSE's problem was.

I had tried to install MSE and kept getting a box that said I had other anti-virus software on my computer. No matter what I removed or cleaned up it would not run. FWIW. Even though you have now been able to install a new anti-virus software, I would strongly recommend you locate and remove whatever remnants of OneCare which were left behind after uninstalling. It is possible these remnants could interfere with your new anti-virus software causing it not to function properly.Download and run Microsoft windows installer cleanup utility from the link below. Scroll through the list of installed components to see if OneCare remains. If not, download and run Glary Utility. Also, use windows search to locate any OneCare files. Make sure you enable search hidden files and folders.http://www.mediafire.com/?nhb5z8e3jal61j3Glary Utilities | GlarysoftI post answers.. Not Questions..
