Renaming the All Users Start Menu entries with UAC off
HelloIf UAC is on at any level, I am not able to rename any start menu entries if they are in the All Users start menu. I can create new ones (but they will be called New Folder) and I can delete folders, but I cant rename any.Do other people see this?Is this a bug? If not, why does it occur?Disabling UAC allows the renaming (after a reboot).

You see to be saying both things at once, you can rename while off, and you cannot.Rating posts helps other users Mark L. Ferguson MS-MVP

I'm seeing the same issue - the only way to rename items on the "All Users" start menu is to disable UAC completely. Otherwise, I get a "folder in use" error. A UAC prompt would be one thing, but that's not the case here...

Oh my god I have just read my original post again and its nonsense....So here we go again.... (but I have edited the original post anyway)I cannot rename start menu entries in the all users start menu with UAC on! The only way to rename them is with UAC off. Any level of UAC stops the renaming and the error is that the "Folder is in use".I can create new folders and delete existing folders with UAC on. When I create a new one it gets called New Folder and the name cannot be changed.

Well, at least I know it is more than me or a buggy copy of Win 7. The 'work-around is nice, but like miost work-arounds is a pain. But, that is what Beta is for, yes

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, isn't this a permissions issue? I believe the All Users portion of the Start Menu belongs to the Administrators group, SYSTEM, but not standard user accounts by default. By having UAC on, most likely at any level, you are probably using a standard user rights to browse Explorer, and are thus unable to edit files. Change Ownership/Permissions on the folder and it subfolders and you should be ready to go.Maybe I missed something but the first thing I do on any installation of Windows is take ownership of the Start Menu, add shortcuts to my programs, then reorganize it by category. On 7, just like in Vista, I do everything I do from my Standard User account with UAC on (and now cranked to 4!).

If this were just a permissions problem, disabling UAC alone wouldn't solve it - additional steps would be necessary. As a result, it looks like UAC - even when set to allow user initiated actions - is interfering with the edits. I'm not in front of my Win7 setup now, but I do know that I was using an admin level account when I ran into this problem with UAC on.

I have had the same problem! When Iinstalled Quicken Deluxe 2007, for some reason the install program only puts a "Quicken 2007" shortcut in the menu. So as in Vista I go in to rename it, and I am not being allowed to. Also, I had loadeda Call Of Dutycdrom gamewhich in Vista will put a shortcut for the game in the menu, in Window7 it only had a shortcut in the"Games" folder - Ken
