Renaming a network named 'unidentified network' in Network and Sharing Centre
What does one have to do in order to end up empowered with the ability to rename a network which is named 'unidentified network'?(I have no difficulty with network connectivity I just want to be able to replace the name 'unidentified network'.) (If it were possible to also disclose the steps that the operating system goes through in order to arrive at the conclusion that a network deserves the appellation 'unidentified network' that would nice too - but not if doing so delays replying to the main question.)

If this machine is not joined to a domain, this is controlled by your local security policy. The default option is to prevent an unidentified network from being renamed or set to private. This is to make it harder for an intruder to gain acess to your computer and its files. If you are happy to relax these settings you need to modify your security settings. Here are the details on how to do that from a previous post in the forums.To do this on your local server , follow these steps:
1. Start --> run --> MMC --> press enter
2. In MMC console , from menu file select Add/Remove Snap-in
3. Select Group Policy Object editor --> Press Add --> select Local computer --> press OK -->press OK
4. Open Computer configration -->Windows Settings -->Security Settings -->select Network list manager policieson the right Side you will see options for :
double click -->Unidentified networks
Then you can select the option to consider the Unidentified networks as private and if user can change the location.
I hope that is will help you and is clear .

Just to confirm - those instructions don't work for me either (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit)
Even after a reboot, setting "user permissions / user can change location" on "unidentified networks properties" does not allow the location of a particular unidentified network to be changed.

This
method
is valid
only for
the
Professional,
Enterprise
and Ultimate editions, but
it
does not work
with other editions of
Windows
7 SP1
to the lack
of security policy console (secpol.msc).
Am I wrong?
If not, how
do I
rename an
"Unidentified Network"
on the
other editions of
Windows
7 SP1?
THANKS
