Remote desktop keep remote display
Hey all, Im guessing this may be any easy fix, but for the life of me, I cant find a solution... What I would like to do is use the inbuilt Win7 remote desktop connection to control a remote computer on the LAN - but I want to keep the display on the remote computer. At present as soon as I remote to the other PC, it locks the screen on the remote computer. Basically what I want to do is remote to the HTPC connected to my TV, start a movie or TV show and have it display on the TV, or conversely, if I watching something on the TV from the HTPC I dont want to lose the vision if I remote to it. Both Pc's are using win 7, its a wired LAN and thats about all folks.. Cheers.

I don't think Remote Desktop is going to do what you want, but you might try using the Remote Assistance tool, that might work.-B- http://www.officeforlawyers.com Author: The Lawyer's Guide to Microsoft Outlook

I agree with Ben. You can't do that with Remote Desktop. The remote computer takes over the session. Bill

Thanks Ben, just gave that a go - but its not quite what im after. It works in a fashion, well better than remote desktop anyway, but not quite there. Its almost if I need to be logged into two computers at once, controlling both with no change to the second display. I would've thought that that wouldn't have been too hard to do?

What doesn't Remote Assistance do that you want/need it to do? Well, what about using something like Go2Assist? (http://www.go2assist.com)-B- http://www.officeforlawyers.com Author: The Lawyer's Guide to Microsoft Outlook

Well as far as I understand I need to submit a request for remote assistance from the computer attached to the TV - meaning that I need to leave the terminal that I am at to send the request... sort of negating the whole benefit of remote.... feel free to correct me if I am wrong. I'll have a squiz at Go2assist - that maybe a solution, thanks mate.

Lazarus2nd I agree both of these solutions fall short for doing this type of thing because the physical access needs to the computer you are trying to control. In my case it is a conference room computer that I need to be able to control or access with out blanking out the screen or interrupting a meeting with say a webinar running to setup up the token. I suppose the remote assistance token could be set up before each meeting but that is just an extra step that seems very unnecessary and just extra work to me that I don't need. If the I'm thinking setting up a tool like VNC seems like a more practical solution here, but was hoping for something native to windows that I would not need to spend time setting up encryption etc... with. Oh well!
