Remote desktop connecting to incorrect computer
When trying to remote to a computer by name Ex. PC-01 it connects but it connects to a different computer that has a different name (same network). When I ping the computer PC-01 by name and try to remote in using the IP address it still connects to the different computer. When I run ipconfig on PC-01 it shows a different IP address then if I ping the name. Use ghost to image our computers (all running win XP) Windows 2003 Server environmentAny info regarding how i can fix this?

Hi, Are you using the computer in Domain?According to description, this issue should be a DNS resolution issue. Could you please check related settings on both computers? Does any other computer can connect to this computer? Thanks.

Yes its part of a Domain. The problem is that we move computers and to me it seems that when I try to connect to PC-01 its connecting to the computer that use to have that name, but now its called PC-02. All computers that you try to remote in to PC-01 connect to PC-02. Ive tried to remote in using its name and IP address when pinging the computer, but even that IP address directs the connection to PC-02. The only way to connect is if I go to PC-01 run IPCONFIG and then come back remote in to the computer using that IP.

If ping is returning the wrong IP address, you either have a DNS issue as Robinson said, or a problem with your hosts file. The latter is easy to check: open the following file in notepad (note it has no extension):C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hostsIf you see an entry for the PC you are trying to ping, either delete that line, or change it to the correct ip address you are getting from ipconfig on the remote PC.If it is not there, you'll need to correct that computer's entry in the domain's DNS.-Matt
