Remote desktop access from Vista Home Basic, through our Cisco VPN to a Windows 7 machine (Pro or Ultimate) on our network which is running Small Business Server.
I have a Windows Vista Home Basic machine as the remote computer. We have a Cisco RV082 Router at the office which has the QuickVPN configured. The Vista Home Basic laptop has the Quick Client installed and working correctly. I have a Windows 7 (Ultimate or Pro) office computer that I need to be able to access the desktop to access filed or programs installed on that machine. The network is a Small Business Server. The Vista Home Basic does have the Remote Desktop Connection, however, it doesn't allow me to connect to that machine when I type in the machine.domain name or using the internal IP address. When I try to setup remote desktop on the Windows 7 machine, it's asking me for a URL to publish information to. What am I missing?

Hi, May I know the following: 1. What is used as DNS server on the remote network, the Windows Server? 2. When you failed to establish the remote desktop connection to the Windows Vista computer, did any errors appear? Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Check if you can ping the Windows Vista Home Basic computer or some other computers on the remote network. 2. Try to access some other resources on the remote network, such as share folder. 3. Check if you can remote to the Windows Vista computer from other computers. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Nicholas: Thanks for your help! (I didn't get an email saying this thread had been replied to, I am sorry for my late reply). 1. Yes, the Windows Server is the DNS on the remote network. It is Small Business Server 2003. 2. Using the "CHRISSIE-W7" or her internal IP address (Pinging her "Name" gives me her IP address). "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network adminitrator" When I connect to my office using VPN and I'm on the server box, (I'm the administrator), I can see her machine on the network. When I try to remote connect using terminal services, I get the same error above PLUS the message that "remote connections may not be enabled or the machine is too busy to answer". The machine is not too busy. Where would I check on the Windows 7 box to see if remote connections are enabled? Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Check if you can ping the Windows Vista Home Basic computer or some other computers on the remote network. (YES) 2. Try to access some other resources on the remote network, such as share folder. (WORKS) 3. Check if you can remote to the Windows Vista computer from other computers. (YES) Hope this helps, I appreciate anything you can do to help! Dan
