Remote connections causes Vista to crash
When using remote desktop from an XP machine to connect to vista the vista machine reboots and of course no connection. Also using VNC or other remote apps I am having troubles getting connections, anyone having connection issues?

Can you try uninstalling VNC and any other 3rd-party remote control applications. Then, can you tell us the exact error message or behavior you mean by "crash"? Thanks.

I have vnc and other remote sw uninstalled, because I cant get the desktop to show Anyway when trying to use remote desktop connection from winxp or 2003 I get to where I logon and the screen freezes after a few minutes it comes back connection lost. I have the vista machine on the opposite side of the room and what happens on remote connection is the machine automaticly reboots itself.

I am trying to find the best person/place to report this to (since it's not a "security" feature).

Are you using a NEW build of Vista (RTM) or a upgrade if so from what
February 14th, 2007 11:30pm

I am not sure what the build was... It was the download from microsft the day the beta was released. I never did get the issue resolved, I had to move on to another project so the machine I was using is now doing other things.

what version of Vista ? was it fresh install or upgrade? What Server and does it have current patches ? that will help us help you
March 1st, 2007 12:49am

I have Vista Business with all updates current. I have Server 2003 Web Edition, with all updates current as well. I actually fixed this problem. I was having problems with Firefox on Vista and did a simple google search to find out that it was an issue with autotuning in vista. This fix for FF also fixed my Remote Desktop Issue as well. great to close this thread 1 other thing IF you upgraded vista from RCx to release the problem could be caused by old beta bits. TRY a fresh install

hi there, the same applies to me: vista x86 msdn, aligned with all updates and legacy drivers - matrox g400 dual head - accessed from various kind of boxes - win2k, winxp, vista - with latest remote desktop client: the accessed desktop crashes 4-5 times per day. event viewer reports no reason, vista says "it's a vista issue" without giving any tip or fix.

have you seen any relationship between the bsod and the application you were using? it's hard to tell with such issues, but I found that I was using excel 2007, version 12.0.6014.5000 MSO 12.0.6017.5000. can't say if I was 'always' using it, but sure for last 5 times...

I have the same issue with Vista crashing when accessing it via remote desktop. It appears to coincide with using calendars in Outlook 2007, and also Excel 2007. The system reports an issue with win32k.sys: Page_Fault_in_nonpaged_area0x00000050 (0xFE056158, 0x00000000, 0x92CD22D5, 0x00000000)win32k.sys Address 92CD22D5 base at 92C000000 I am running fully patched versions of Windows Vista Business and Office 2007 Professional.

I have one user that remotes in to a his desktop machine and uses Excel spreadsheets in compatability mode and the system crashes and he loses data. Just had Outlook today just up and quit without warning today also.
June 28th, 2007 6:29am

I can confirm that in my environment the issue is related to excel 2007. I usually have outlook 2007 and some IE windows opened during workday; I tried working without excel 2007 opened on remote machine for around 10 days without any single crash. then I tried to use excel 2007 and I get 4-5 crashes per day.

OK, I am having this same issue - Excel 2007and Outlook 2007seem to crash the computer when I'm connecting to my Vista Business by Remote Desktop. I too am running a clean install of Vista, with all patches up-to-date. Is there no fix or workaround for this problem? It's freakin' hard to get things done when your computer crashes and needs to reboot regularly!!

Vista ultimate 64bit, all updates currently available installedOffice 2007 (with all updates)Q6600 processor with 4GB ram---------It appears the trigger is the clipboard when using remote desktop. That is, if the machine has been on for a while, an excel spreadsheet is open, selecting a block of cells, then copy will cause the system to bsod.Analyzing the memory.dmp file also points to excel. Not really sure what the issue is, all the current updates are in place for both vista (64 bit) and excel. It's pretty awkward to use excel without clipboard functionality. I am having the repro of the crash and blue screen when I use Remote Desktop on Vista(RTM with all applicable updates)and opening Excel 2007. Please let us know the solution. I see this as aMAJORVista migration blocker. Please contact me if you need any blue screen data.

Same thing happens with Access 2007. I also have the problem with Excel 2007. It's really annoyingworking from a remote site when the computer reboots every time you try to use Excel or Access. Microsoft - Fix this!!! Grrrr

I found by updating win32k.sys with something newer resolved this issue for me.Specifically, kb940145. It's a hotfix, so you'll have to request it from MS.

Can I get information on debugging this? I have three new Dell Inspirons. Mine had additional memory (from the factory). When I connect via remote desktop to my computer, it persistently crashes after 5-10 minutes (the Vista machine reboots). When I connect to the other Inspirons, no such trouble. Thanks...

Cancel that - looks like the Excel 2007 was right on. I connected via remote desktop without using Excel 2007 and it worked fine. I changed Excel to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2, and then used it to see if that made a difference and no more problems. I've been connected for virtually hours without being booted. Seems to fix the Excel problem for me, anyhow.

hi Joe, can you tell us exactly what you changed? I set 'run this program in compatibility mode for windows xp (service pack 2)' on C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE, then I open excel through remote desktop and windows crashed after some minutes of work in excel... :-(

It worked for a few hours after I made the compatiability change. Late last night it started crashing again. Then I was back to crashing after just a few minutes again. I tried other compatiability modes, but they didn't seem to help - no idea why it helped so much the first time. Annoying! Does the clipboard get shared when using remote desktop or something, and is there a way to prevent that sharing?

Folks, please review my suggestion some lines above. I've been using remote desktop with excel/word and clipboard successfully since installed that fix.Why reinvent the wheel....

I am having the same issue connecting from xp to server 3003. I can connect using rdp but when I use the /adm it reboots the server. Is there a fix for this that anyone knows of? I can not use the /console command either it comes up with "unknown parametererror" and then reboots the server.
