Remote Desktop host configuration?
I have been trying to google up information on how to set up my Vista machine at home as a remote desktop host, but I have found that information is lacking (incomplete, poorly written, confusing, etc.). Can anyone please either tell me or point me to a good source for how to perform this configuration? Here are my details:Host: Vista UltimateClient: XP ProfessionalI also should mention that I have a DSL modem. My internet connection is hosted by my phone company. I believe this may be an issue with determining the correct IP address. Many thanks!

Configure the Vista host like this... http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/ScreenShots/XP/RDP6-XPClienttoVistaServerConfig.jpg Configure the XP RDP 6 client like this... http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/ScreenShots/XP/RDP6-XPClientSettings.jpg You need to open TCP Port 3389 on any firewall/router the PC you want to remotely access/control is behind. Note that some DSL modems are also routers so you either need to configure it for port forwarding or put it into a bridge or pass through mode. As far as addressing is concerned you might consider using a free dynamic naming service like No-IP.com or DynDNS. You install a small program on a PC on your local LAN. The program contacts the No-IP or DynDNS servers on a time scheduled basis and maps your current ISP assigned IP to a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). Some routers also support these. You can then call the PC via the FQDN. I have use both at one time or another and each works equally well. I currently use No-IP.com... http://www.no-ip.com http://www.dyndns.com Basic Remote Desktop troubleshooting help, etc... http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/RemoteDesktop/RemoteDesktopSetupandTroubleshooting.html In any case use a STRONG password to login to Remote Desktop, possibly a random high number port (ie. security through obscurity) or run Remote Desktop through a VPN or SSH tunnel. http://www.microsoft.com/protect/yourself/password/checker.mspx

There is a patch and the patch permits several functions, first the salas xp patch permits 2 connections at the same time and the termserv patch permits as much as 200 connections at the same time with the windows xp and vistaremote desktop server to access the server over the internet all that is needed is port fowarding in your router and a small client from no-ip to convert your dinamic public ip to a static dns name e.g. http://cursosweb.sytes.net and thats all. Oh i almost forgot if you us the iis server builtin the windows os you can run your web server on port 80 and in your web page you could install the active x control that microsoft has made and does offer free of charge, so ther is no client that has to be installed in the clent machine all you need to do is open your internet explorer and from there you can make your connection. NOTE: patching the xp os system is not legal and i dont recomend that anyone installs the patch! it is for learning purposes only and not a replacement of the windows terminal server system!!!!!!! P.S. dont forget the firewall in theOSit will always block your connections !!!!!!!!
