Remote Desktop Services Manager Hang
Hi there,I've just upgraded from Vista Ultima to W7 Ultimate. Everything works as expected except for the "Remote Desktop Services Manager" MMC snap-in. I've added 14 servers (10 TS sessions per server aprox) to a grup in the console, and everytime I open that console, it starts to collect real-time session information for all 14 servers at the same time, and aproximatedly 10 seconds after opening, the console hangs.I've set the following options:Process List: Update manually (default: 1 second, tried also 600 secs)Status Dialogs: Update manually (default: 1 second, tried also 600 secs)Confirm actionsSave configuration on exitUN-CHECK the "Remember connections with the Server" check box. With all that options I can now open de console, and use it, but I must explore the sessions on the servers one-by-one, connecting, checking, and disconnecting... Does somebody know what the ____ happen?? As a workaround I installed a VM with W2K3R2 and I'm using the virtual machine for that task... Thanks!Alex Lillo

Hi Alex, Please check the following: 1. Please use Process Monitor to monitor which DLL files are loaded by MMC. 1) Download the tool from the following site: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx 2) Please run this tool and start the monitoring 3) Reproduce the issue. 4) Stop the monitor and review the log to check the DLL files. Please save the log file and use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the file and then share the URL with me. 2. If you add fewer servers to the console, will it become better? 3. Please perform a Clean Boot to check the issue: Clean boot ================= 1) Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2) Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3) Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. NOTE: we can go back to normal boot by running msconfig again and checking on Normal Startup in the General tab. In the Clean Boot Environment, the third party services and applications are disabled, please check if the issue reoccurs at this time. If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to one application or service we have disabled. You may use the MSCONFIG tool again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit. Hope this helps. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

Hi, May I know how it works if you add fewer servers to the console? When checking the log you shared with us, I just find that the mmc.exe uses a lot of CPU resource when it is running. Based on my understanding, I think this may be related to that you added many servers and this may lead that the communications and data is huge and it will need the system IO and CPU to process it. At this time, please try the following: 1. Install the latest version of RSAT and see how it works. Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 2. Meanwhile, considering that this copy was installed with an upgrade installation of Windows 7, if there is a clean installed Windows 7 computer, please also check how it works on it. Hi Nicholas,With one server in a group, it works fine. Although you note the CPU working "just a little", and the task manager showing a MMC.EXE use of 2% - 5% (wich I don't think It can be normal, because with previously installed versions of Windows, the process (tsadmin.exe) uses this amount of CPU for ALL the group. With 4 servers there are 1%-5% CPU peaks., and the console starts being unusable. With 8 Servers there are 5-12% CPU peaks, min 9% max 13% permanently.. The Users tab for the top of the group refreshes constantly and makes it very difficult to find the session you need. With 10 servers, performance is similar to 8-9 servers. With the 11 server added, the console is almost unusable. With the 12 server, I must close the console. With all the group (14 servers), I can't use the console. This include a complete hang of mmc.exe with prevents me from closing the process normally. I must go to task manager and kill it.I will say it again: This DOES NOT happen with the last 3 versions of Windows (Server 2003/R2, Vista or XP). I didn't say that before: The TS Servers are Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise. Anyway, I will try to test it on another computer... Thanks,

We're having similar issues at our company after upgrading to Windows 7 64-bit from Windows XP. Terminal Services Manager works perfect on WinXP, but the Remote Desktop Services Manager on Windows 7 is pretty much unusable. The screen will flicker and freeze constantly. When it 'freezes' the entire window goes white - clients are not visible. When they reappear, our operator has to try and click through quickly and do what we need to do before the next freeze. It looks like it's attempting to refresh and getting stuck (though refresh times are all set to manual).

Having the same issue. Using RDSM on a Win7 64-bit workstation to monitor about a dozen Windows 2003/2008 terminal servers. The console flickers every few seconds, freezes, and sometimes just crashes altogether. Never had a problem with it on Win-XP. I set the refresh times to 300 seconds and to manual but this didn't change anything.

Has anyone found a fix for this yet? I just installed Windows 7 Pro on a dual core machine with 4GB of ram and the Term Serv manager is horrible. I went from vista 64bit and it worked great. This tool is 100% necessary for me to do my job, I can't live without it. We have a TS farm with 88 servers and over 5000 users connected to them. I need to look at all servers together to find user id's when they get stuck for for profile deletion. The refresh rate on this is horrible. Once it unfreezes and starts to work, it refreshes every few seconds and is impossible to use. There has got to be a fix for this or unfortunately I'll have to go back to vista.....which I absolutely hate.

Well the best fix I've found is to RDP into a 2003 server and use the term serv manager. THANKS FOR THE HELP MICROSOFT!!!

Yeah, I've done that too. Since this thread was marked as answered, I opened up a new one. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/563980a5-301d-45f6-be84-ebcc53a10ee2 But, they marked that one as answered too.
