Remote Desktop Security
Hey guys, I have a question regarding remote desktop connection. So let's say I'm connecting to a remote computer and the computer is infected with viruses and spyware. Am I running a risk by connecting to this computer remotely? Can some sort of worm virus or a type of trojan transfer onto my computer while being connected remotely? Would anything install into my computer while connected to the computer? What are the risks of connecting to the infected computer remotely? Thank you guys!

If you are RDPing into a suspect computer ensure you are not presenting your local drives to the remote computer (or the clipboard or anything else for that matter). It's under the options for the remote desktop client. Other than that I've never heard of anything spreading via RDP. If you are worried use a sandboxed VM to RDP into the remote computer. Oracle VirtualBox is free. Build yourself a disposable XP host in the VM that you won't care about if it gets destroyed.Matt W. CCNP, CCDA, CCNA-S, RHCT, MCSE, MCSA, MCP+I, A+

Hello Matt thanks for the reply. Now my question is, how do I know if my local drives are presented to the remote computer or the clipboard? Thanks again!

Before you connect to the remote computer on the Remote Desktop Connection client go to "Options" -> "Local Resources" -> "More". Deselect everything.Matt W. CCNP, CCDA, CCNA-S, RHCT, MCSE, MCSA, MCP+I, A+
