Remote Desktop Connection works from Windows 7 to Windows XP, but not vice versa
I have three computers. One with Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate, two with Windows XP Pro SP3. The two XP can connect in either direction. The 7 can connect to either XP But neither XP can connect to the 7 machine. I can share files between all 3 in both directions, just the RDC doesn't work in that one direction Windows XP Pro SP3 to Windows 7 Ultimate. I disabled the Windows 7 firewall, it doesn't work. I have allow computers to connect remotely checked, it doesn't work. I have same name and password on an administrator account on all three computers. I updated the Windows XP machines' Remote Desktop Connection Client Software to 7.0 from: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/969084 thanks in advance

I have the same problem. I can' add anyone to the "Add Users" panel. When I go to the "Select Users or Groups screen, it finds the person's username on the domain just fine and shows it:First Name(username@hospice.local)If I select "OK", it shows up in the list as "First Name" but with an outline of a face (no color) to the left. If I Say OK and then click on "Select Users", I get the outline of the face with a red ? on top and either a blank or a number next to it.THis happens only on Windows 7Help!!!HankRegards, Hank Arnold (MVP - DS)

Hi Iridius,I would like to confirm what error occurs when you try to connect from XP to Windows 7 or use the Remote Desktop. In Windows 7, try the following steps:1. open Networking and Sharing Center, choose Change advanced settings. Turn on file and printer sharing, turn on network discovery, turn off password protected sharding.2. Click the Start button, type User Accounts in the Start search box and press Enter. Click Manage user accounts. Turn on Guest account.3. If any security program or firewall is enabled, please temporarily disable it.after that, try to connect to Windows 7 again.Vivian Xing - MSFT

It's a bit hard to describe, but on any W7 machine, if I try to add a domain user to the list of users authorized to access the machine via RDP, everything looks good (the correct username@hospice.local shows up) until I accept the addition. Instead of seeing the normal "user" icon withthe user's name, I get an icon that looks like an outline of the expected icon with a "?" on top. If I close the windows and reopen to add more users, the name disappears...HankRegards, Hank Arnold (MVP - DS)

The following is the error I get: Remote Desktop cannot connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons: 1)Remote access to the server is not enabled 2)The remote computer is turned off 3)The remote computer is not available on the network Make sure that the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled. I did the 3 things you suggested and it still gives me the same message. When I turn off the firewall the message pops up almost instantly, when it's one it takes about 5 seconds.

Hank, I still don't understand what this has to do with my thread about RDC problems from Windows XP to Windows 7 in a workgroup where the other direction works? If it is a mis-post please start another thread and delete your posts here so as not to confuse the topic, thanks.

I am a litter confused, are iridius69 and iridius the same person? Does the Remote Desktop issue still occur when remote connecting from XP to Vista? If the answer is yes, how about using IP address instead:1. In Windows 7, click the Start button, type cmd and press Enter.2. In the Command Prompt window, type IPCONFIG and press Enter3. Note the IP address.4. In Windows XP, start the Remote Desktop session, type the Windows 7 IP address and check the results. If it persists, open Command Prompt in Windows XP and try PING windows 7 IP. Does it work? you can collect Screenshot of it and upload it to the http://skydrive.live.com/ using your Live ID and I will check it: Screenshot ======== 1. Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard. 2. Click the "Start" menu, type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter. 3. In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste", click the "File" menu, and click "Save". 4. The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: "screenshot". 5. Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box, click Desktop on the left pane and then click "Save". Regarding SkyDrive: 1. As an important note, if you do not want others to access the uploaded files, when uploading the file, please expand the "Share with" box, choose "Select people...", and then type my Windows Live ID "v-vxin@hotmail.com" (without the quotation marks) in the Individual box. For detailed steps on how to upload files with SkyDrive, please refer to: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/4fc10639-02db-4665-993a-08d865088d65Vivian Xing - MSFT

Yes Iridius is the same As iridius69. I have all 3 computers on static IPs and pinging and files/folder sharing work in both directions between all three computers. The only thing that does not work is the XP (clent) to Windows 7 (host). I tried to connect via the IP instead of the server name and got same error message. This install of XP was customized with nLite is there some service that may not be running that would cause this unidiectionalb probelm.
