Remote Desktop Connection to Windows 7 stops working or freezes
I have a notebook running windows 7 because the display is to small i connect with my windows 7 desktop PC over RDP to the notebook. My Desktop PC has two 22 inch screens. I use the RDP option "use all my monitors for the remote session" to have a very large remote screen for my notebook. 80% of the time it works just fine. But i noticed that when i want to save files to my file server the session often freezes or it get's disconnected. The server is a VM with w2k3. Hosted on a w2k8 r2 Hyper-v server. The notebook has also runnning a VPN AT&T client in split tunnel mode to be able to work on my company network from home office. I suspect that the VPN client is causing the problem but without it i can't work at all. Has anyone experienced the same problem with RDP?

Hi, Based on my research and experience, this issue can occur by network bandwidth or incompatible third party program. To troubleshoot the issue, please try the following steps. 1. Temporarily do not use RDP session and transfer files to the server on the laptop directly to check the result. Does the system hang up? 2. Restart the Desktop to Safe Mode with Networking and remote connect to laptop, and then save files to file server again. What’s the result? 3. Temporarily turn off firewall and perform a Clean Boot to check the result. If the issue still occurs, please upload the Event log to the Skydrive ( www.skydrive.live.com ). Collect Event log ========================= a. Click "Start", input "eventvwr" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search bar and press Enter. b. Right click on "Application" on the left frame, choose "Save Log file As"; in the pop-up window, click to choose the Desktop icon on the left frame, input "app" in the "File name" blank, and then click save. c. Right click on "System", with the same method, save it as "sys". d. Locate the two saved log files on the Desktop and upload them. Thanks, Novak

Hi Novak, Here are the first result on the steps to try: When not using RDP there does not occur a problem with the transfer of files between server and laptop. But i noticed a different behaviour. When the AT&T VPN client is not running connections to the file server seem to drop van time to time. I does not always hapen after a reboot the system works good. I have not found out when this connection droping starts. So as long as the VPN client of AT&T is loaded there is no connectivity problem. There does not have to be a VPN tunnel active. I also tested RDP from notebook to desktop and then a could not reproduce this problem. tommorow i will run the next tests.

Novak, Now i have done the safe mode with networking test. The result is file share connections, web browsing, rdp it al does not work anymore. The only networking that works are the basics ping, nslookup. Also the AT&T VPN client does not detect any available networks. So it can't start making connections. Looking at the events in the windos system log i noticed: Failed to load: 1-driver-vmsrvc discache spldr wanarpv6 To me it looks like when the AT&T VPN client is not or can't run all networking is disrupted. Maby the AT&T VPN client needs to be investigated. Does this make sence, could the AT&T client be the cause of the problems?

technocrate, I am using RDP to my note from a desktop to increase the display. To go from one 14" screen to two 22"screens. And RDP windows 7 makes it possible to use a mulite monitor option that responses in the same way it does on the desktop. And this all works fine. But when i want to save a file in the rdp session to one of the connected network drives then i get the freeze problem. And sometimes the freeze is very short and there is no disconnect. But sometimes the freeze is long and rdp disconnects. It looks like it is gathering information to build the list of available files on the network drive. If this is already in the cache there is almost no freeze but if the cache is empty then i get the long freeze. And this problem only occurs with network drives. All other connections work without any problem. The eventlog does not show any errrors. Thanks for your responce any other ideas?

Hi, Does the issue persist in Safe Mode with Networking? This issue also can occur by incompatible driver. To troubleshoot the issue, I suggest uninstall the driver and upgrade to the latest driver. Meanwhile, I suggest you remove the AT&T VPN Client and create a Windows built-in Client for a test. To create a VPN client on Windows 7, please refer to the following steps. 1.Click Start button --> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Share Center --> Click "Set up a new connection or network" under the "Change your networking settings". 2.Select " Connect to a workplace" and click Next --> Use my internet connection (VPN) --> Type the internet address and destination name in the box --> Check 'Don't connect now; just set it up so I can connect later' and click Next --> Enter your VPN username and password --> Then click the 'Create' button --> Click the 'Close' button to finish. Thanks, Novak
