Remote Desktop Connection no longer works
Upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7.Prior to this, Remote Desktop Connection to work server worked fine. Now I get:"An error occurred while setting up the connection. Contact your workplace administrator for assistance. "Error code: 0x80072efdI have tried turning off firewall and various other suggestions from the net related to problem with same error code related to Windows Update. No sign of life so far.I'd be grateful for any suggestions - especially as my alternative route - Outlook Web Access - also seems to be rubbish in Windows 7 (I can connect but there is a 40 delay between typing and letters appearing on screen).

First Microsoft Windows Update. If any update, do it.Second, go to Control Panel, Remote Settings, and check remote assistance and remote desktop (allow). Third, select the user you want to use in RD.Forth, do check again for port 3389 on the firewall. If you have the Windows firewall check it and if you have anti-virus or another firewall, check it too and if necessary, add port 3389 (RD) to allow TCP and UDP, and check also the IP to put on the router.Fifth, come back and tell us the result. And last but not least, take a walk on the bike, think about it a bit away from the computer... and do it all again. Thanks for the ideas. Windows update done. Fully updated Control panel: there is no "remote settings". There is "RemoteApp and desktop connections" which has single option "Set up a new connection with remoteapp and desktop connections" which then asks for a URL beginning with https:// No option to select user or "allow" remote connection. 3389 set to allow on windows firewall and router for tcp and udp same error code

go to the system properties, right click computer and then left on properties. go to advance settings, then remote tab and then see if remote desktop is checked off, by the way are you using a vpn to connect first or straight ip? check your rdp setting for the connection and edit them...turn off the sound. also your MTU on your router could be too high

This is the correct path. I forget to add that this is on system properties. I hope you forgive me and post if did work or not. If not, we will think in something else.Adelino Araujo

Mmm - didn't know about those settings - but they were all turned on.I don't know about vpn. I always simply entered an address into the little Remote Desktop Connection box (no other preparation needed).Never needed the https:// prefix which now seems to be required.

You have to try with another computer and check those definitions to put remote desktop to work. If you have 3389 open on the router, you only need the home IP address to get there from any point of the globe! Go to http://www.whatismyip.com and check the outside IP. Write it down on one paper and then check that the router has 3389 open for TCP/UDP.After that, you can check that in another friends house or elsewhere. Give it a try!If that does not work, put here the layout of your network to see it more clearly. Ok? Adelino Araujo

The Remote Desktop Connection works fine with another (XP) computer in the house (same router). My laptopworked fine on Vista till the upgrade.I don't understand why my IP matters. I'm trying to connect out to a work server (TSWEB). My Windows 7 laptop connects via wifi to a Netgear DG834GT router and then to the internet.I would be glad to hear if others have used and had no problems with Remote Desktop connection on Windows 7.

Remote desktop seems to be working ok for me. I can connect with both my hostname (computername or computerame.domain.extension via the net) as well as via the ip address associated with it. I have tested it with both my internal Wifi card as well as my network card (via a cable). I am using a laptop if that matters. Perhaps if you try connecting to the work server (From your laptop) via the work servers ip address and if it does work, there may be something incorrectly set in your windows 7 client dns settings. I just did a fresh install this morning of windows 7 that would be my only difference from you, as you have upgraded. But that shouldn't affect you to the point that you cannot connect. If you are able to connect via your other XP machine there should be no reason aside from a firewall(between your 7 machine and your work server) blocking you from making the tcp connection on 3389. Please let me know if you have any luck.- PeteEdit: Maybe the server is out of concurent sessions? For instance try it from a third computer and see if you can get in. If not, go onto your work server and goto control panel, admin tools, terminal services manager. In there you should see who and what sessions are connected to that computer directly.

IT Helpdesk at my workplace has resolved the problem by getting me to START/RUN a command line: mstsc /x:tsweb.domainname.com - where x is a single letter (= a drive name??) I have no idea what this did - but it worked. It immediately opens up the remote computer. I'm assuming that it somehow bypassed the Remote Desktop Connection and made a direct connection to the work server. Thanks to all for help. I would still like to know why the Remote Desktop programme fails!
