Remote Desktop Connection from different xp users to Win7
Hi, I'm having a problem connecting from my xp laptop to my win7 desktop. I have 2 accounts on the laptop. One of them can connect successfully to the Win7 box but the other account just gets 0x80004005 authentication error when I try to connect. I am using the same log in information. I cannot find any differences in the setup of either account on the laptop that could be causing this. Is there any way to simply clone the complete rdp setup from one account to another ? Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi , Look into your Remote TAB on Win 7 box there is a button called Select User so check this how many users you have selected there if you did not select your user from which you want to login so it will never be able to login to your that win 7 box. I think this will solve your problem . Regards. Shafaquat Ali.M.C.I.T.P Exchange 2007 M.C.I.T.P Windows Server 2008 M.C.T.S OCS Server 2007 R2

Tried that but no luck. Have both the account names from the laptop listed on the 'Select User' on the desktop. I'm thinking that there must be something setup different between the two accounts on the laptop but as far as I can see I'm using the same settings from both accounts. Are there rdp settings stored in the registry somewhere ? Obviously the connection itself is working as one account can connect successfully, so it must be something set differently on the account that is won't connect, I just have no idea what that is :(

Hi, I would like to suggest you create a new user account and test the issue with this new account. What is the result? If it works with the new account, you may transfer the files in the user folder of the corrupted user account to the new one. You may delete the old account after making sure the new one is working normally. Hi, Tried a new user account and it has the same problem. As soon as I try to connect I get the authentication error. I wish there was some way to compare user accounts so I could figure out why one account works and another does not. Edit: 1. I attempted to use file and Settings Transfer Wizard to copy the working account to a new account. The transfer was successful but the new account still got the authentication error. 2. I did a registry search for all references of 'Terminal Serv' and exported them. I then did the same on the new account. However there were no differences. It would be nice if there was some place to look up this error, 'An authentication error has occurred (Code: 0x80004005). Remote computer: Tower", but even google has no hits. Ang.

Hi, If you choose to set “Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)” for Remote Desktop, does the issue reoccur? In addition, have you tried to disable all the antivirus programs and firewalls? Hi, I don't see how the problem could be the windows 7 machine (the one I am connecting to) since one of the accounts on the laptop can connect with no problem. I have the laptop (XP with all updates, service packs, etc) with the two user accounts, one of which connects to the windows 7 box with no issue, the other gets ths 'authentication failure' message. Both accounts are using the same account information for the windows 7 machine. I have tried creating a new 'clean' user account, it has the same error. I have tried using the Files and Settings transfer to copy the working account to another account, with no success, it has the same error. I have even tried comparing and copying registry settings from 'Terminal Serv*' from the working account to the non working account. All with no luck. If the error message would actually provide any useful information it would be much more useful. I can't see where/how the accounts are different but they obviously are. Ang. Edit: I have just done a complete factory reset on the laptop, then when asked what accounts to create during the install I gave it the two names. I would have thought that since both accounts were created at the same time they would both work the same but the first account can connect to Win7 with no problem but the second account still simply gives the Authentication Failure 0x507 error. This is a clean installation of WinXP with all updates, SP3 and the 6.1 patch for Remote Desktop Connection. I can see no reason why one account would connect and the other will not.
