Remote Desktop Connection freezes the machine I connect to when I disconnect.
I recently built a new computer and installed windows 8.1. After setting up remote desktop, I found that every time I disconnect from the box that I have, it hangs for about 2-3 seconds. I host game servers on the box, so a hang like that will cause people to disconnect or even just loose connection. The box runs Window server 2008 rc2. I am unsure as how to fix this. Thank you for any help you guys may have.

Are there any errors in the Event Viewer? Check the windows application and system logs under the Windows folder.

If you need instructions to get to the event viewer see here.

This is a fresh copy of windows 8.1 with all of the updates installed. I am having no problems with anything else. I don't think windows is corrupted.

That assumption can lead you to hours upon hours of pointless troubleshooting. Windows can get corrupted on an install, it's best to rule out the easy steps first before going into the complex ones. Have you checked Windows logs for errors? ZigZag was suggesting you run the scan on the affected computer, meaning the server.

I have no problems loging in/out from my laptop running windows 7 remote desktop. I just tested it. But on my computer running windows 8.1 the server hangs on disconnect. So it should be something caused on my end not the server. Also the other user who has access to the box and connects the same way from windows 7 does not cause this hang that I am now experiencing.

Also event viewer from my computer has nothing about remote desktop in it.

After doing sfc /scannow no errors were found on my computer.

I'd suggest running the scan on the server as well. Even if just your PC causes the issue on the server, the server is the one experiencing a problem. Not your PC.

Hi

In addition to what has been suggested, we wonder if this issue happens to other users who using Windows 8.1? If no issues from other Windows 8.1 machine. I suggest you uncheck all the options under Experience Tab of Remote Desktop Advanced settings and test again. And please keep your Windows 8.1 up to date, there might be relevant updates havent been installed.

Regards,

D. Wu
