Remote Desktop Connection Failed but ping OK on windows 7
Hi, I am trying to make a remote desktop connection to my working Windows7 work station using my Windows7 laptop through VPN. Both OS are Windows 7 Enterprise. The connection just failed. However, I can ping to the WS. And I have surely enabled the remote desktop on WS by selecting "Select Allow Connections From Computers Running Any Version Of Remote Desktop to allow connections from any version of Windows". Also, I have allowed the remote desktop from firewall. BTW the remote desktop used to work but after some Windows update it doesn't any more. I really have no clue. Thanks for any help! Cheers

Hi, is there any error message when you are connecting to your remote Desktop? 1. When you connect to your Windows 7 laptop through VPN, are you able to access your shared resources? (Like fileshare?) 2. Possible to let us know the error message when connecting to Remote Desktop? Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. 1. Yes I am able to access for example, our NAS resources through the VPN 2. The error message is so generic. The whole message is "Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons 1) Remote access to the server is not enabled. 2) The remote computer is turned off 3) The remote computer is not available on the network. Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled" And how I enabled remote desktop was just like I described: I selected "Select Allow Connections From Computers Running Any Version Of Remote Desktop to allow connections from any version of Windows" on my WS and enabled remote desktop on firewalls of both computers. Is there something else I need to do? Update: I tried to connect to my college's computer from my laptop and it works. So I think it is my work station's problem. So now I need to figure out how to configure to "enable remote desktop connection from another computer"

Hi, Based on the errors you shared, was there any changes done to your router recently? Have you configured 3389 (Remote Desktop port) forwarding on your router? Cheers

Hi , First, make sure the work machine is turned on. If everything is fine before downloading the Windows Update, you may uninstall the update patch which you doubt manually. (Control Panel->Programs and Features->View installed Updates->right click and uninstall) Another way is to perform the system restore which will preserve all the software and files before the previous restore point. And all of your private date will be preserved. Help it helps. Tracy Cai TechNet Community Support

It turned out, according to our administrator, to be a problem with some password synchronization problem between the workstation and the domain controller. In fact we could ping to my workstation, or access other network resources from the workstation, but neither remote desktop, nor other remote connection to the workstation would work. However, after remove my workstation from the domain and re-join it, it is working fine now. Some additional information, in the event log from domain controller, there is some error messages like this: The session setup from the computer COMPUTER_NAME failed to authenticate. The name(s) of the account(s) referenced in the security database is COMPUTER_NAME$. The following error occurred: Access is denied

Computer has a password just like a user. The password is used to encrypt the information between computer and domain controller when they communicate. When your computer password gets changed but it doesn't get synced with Active Directory then your computer is no longer able to authenticate with the domain controllers. As result you are not able to authenticate against that machine and you get "Access is denied" when you try authenticate against it.
