Remote Desktop
I have a Data computer which Win 7 Professional installed on it now. I have a user name and password to be able to log into windows upon restart of the computer. I use this same user name and password to use Windows Remote Desktop to access it at one of our locations. I want to be able to still log into using Windows remote desktop, but if I restart the computer, I want it to be able to auto log into windows by itself. Does anyone know how to do this?

You can use this utility: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963905.

What is the actual problem? I can understand that in some cases autologon is necessary, but when connecting by RDP you have to authenticate no matter what. Do you have problems logging on by RDP when not already logged on to the computer?

That utility just puts a nice interface on it and makes it easy to set up. What is the actual problem? I can understand that in some cases autologon is necessary, but when connecting by RDP you have to authenticate no matter what. Do you have problems logging on by RDP when not already logged on to the computer? There doesn't have to be an issue. Let's say that I have a machine set up for recording video surveillance. This machine doesn't have a monitor or even a keyboard or mouse, just the camera capture card and software. But it's not a service, so a user has to be logged on in order for it to run - and the program is set to run automatically at logon. Let's say I log in remotely to perform updates and one of these updates requires a reboot. Now, if I forget to log back in afterwards then I have no surveillance running, but if I set it up to autologon then I don't have to worry about it. Or even say, after a power failure and the machine reboots... (BTW, I have a machine set up exactly like this, but it's running XP not Windows 7.)

The Computer is a Video Surveillance Computer, so upon restart, auto log on is preferred. And we access them using Remote Desktop to make changes to the system. so we need both for security and auto turn for the DVR itself.Richard Stremlow

Do you have a walk thru on how to do thisRichard Stremlow

Do what? Set up the PC for the surveillance? It's not hard to do, depending on your capture software. You'll need to set it up first, before you remove the monitor and input devices - because it's easier then than to try to do it over a remote session. Once it's set up with the timing and detection thresholds you like, put a shortcut for the DVR software in the user's Startup folder and set up your autologon. Place the machine where you want (hopefully in a secure location), reconnect all the cameras, network and power and you're done. You might also want to check the machine's BIOS and make sure it's set to automatically restart after a power failure.

Bob, everybody knows hows to set up a DVR as described above. We are talking about windows remote desktop here using windows 7. It sounds like you didnt get the question, I am talking about changing the registry to auto log past a user name and password that is needed for the network and domain. But thanks for trying to submit something to help out. Richard Stremlow
