Remote Assistance Backward Compatibility
I had a friend who bought a new Vista machine and in trying to help her on the phone, we attempted to initiate a Remote Assistance Session but were never able to connect. She was using Vista Premium Home and I was using XP Professional. We both disabled our firewalls prior to attempting connection. Since I have never worked on Vista before I wanted to know if the Remote Assistance application works between Vista and XP... Are there some specific ports that are not opened by default but need to be?

Make sure the Remote Assistance settings on your friends Vista machine are configured so the Create invitations that can only be used from computers running Windows Vista or later check box is UNCHECKED. To do that have her sign on as an administrator and go to Control Panel | System and Maintenance | System | Allow Remote Access | Remote Assistance | Advanced. You also may need to open TCP Port 3389 on any firewall/router she is behind. With the Windows Firewall check the Remote Assistance checkbox to enable access.
